Jorge Cabrera doesn’t have Covid-19.

That is the result of a test he took the Democratic candidate for the 17th State Senate District seat took this week, he announced in a release issued Sunday.

Cabrera had taken the test after a hospital visit prompted by Covid-like systems including fatigue, fever, chills, and vomiting.”

This morning, I was informed that my wife and I tested negative for Covid-19! I am currently resting and will return to campaigning once I fully recover,” Cabrera stated in the release.

I appreciate all the support I’ve received over the last two days. It’s important that we all remain vigilant throughout this pandemic and our team will continue the best safety practices put forth by the CDC as we have throughout the campaign. I look forward to being back out on the trail talking about the issues that matter most to the residents of” Connecticut.

Fearing Covid, Cabrera Alerts Staff, Awaits Results

Jorge Cabrera at a July press event for Stop & Shop workers.

Jorge Cabrera, the Democratic candidate for the 17th State Senate District seat, informed his staff Saturday that he has developed Covid 19-like symptoms and is awaiting results of a test.

For now, he has quarantined himself at home and directed his staff (including volunteers) to get tested and work remotely.

The Hamden Democrat is challenging Republican incumbent State Sen. George Logan.

Following is the text of a release Cabrera issued Saturday:

Last night, Friday, September 25th, I began showing symptoms of COVID-19, which included fatigue, fever, chills, and vomiting. Within hours of showing symptoms, I was driven by my wife to Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Room, where I was seen by a doctor. At the time, doctors suspected COVID-19, but did not administer a test. I was sent home with a recommendation to get tested the following morning. I returned home late that night and quarantined at my house. This afternoon I took a COVID-19 test and will get the results within the next 24 – 72 hours. While I wait for the results I will err on the side of caution and rest at home where I will quarantine for the next 14 days, per state and CDC guidelines.

All campaign staff including volunteers have been notified and directed to get tested, self-quarantine and return to full remote work until further notice. At the moment, all canvassing by my campaign has been suspended, and pending the results of the test we will work with public health officials to contact trace.

Since the start of the campaign, safety measures have been implemented at campaign headquarters. Workstations have been spaced at least 6 feet apart. Face masks have been available and required to be worn properly. Hand sanitizer has been readily available. CDC safety guidelines, including the use of face masks and social distancing, have been required of all door-to-door canvass operations, including for myself.

While Connecticut has led the way in protecting our residents from COVID-19, the virus is still very much a threat to our safety. Governor Lamont continues to lead by following the science and data and we must all adhere to the safety guidelines to protect our communities.
