Docs Work To Save Life Of Plane Crash Survivor

Yale-New Haven Hospital emergency room doctors were working mid-day Wednesday on a critically ill survivor of a plane crash near Tweed-New Haven Airport.

Two people were inside the Piper PA 38 when it crashed around 10 a.m. in a marsh about 400 feet from the runway, on the East Haven side of the airport, during a training exercise. One person died, WTNH reported.

The other person in the plane was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital’s emergency room.

It’s typical in a plane crash like this that the patient would suffer head-to-toe injuries including internal injuries,” emergency department Vice-Chair Andy Ulrich said in remarks to reporters at the hospital.

New Haven emergency crews joined East Haven’s to respond at the scene of the crash, wading through deep mud to extricate the victims. The victims’ names were not immediately available.

Erica Pandey contributed reporting.
