On The Record

Students revealed what it’s like when their parents need to bring them along to work. So did their principal — who had similar experiences when she was a student in the same school back in the day.

Those revelations appear courtesy of student reporters in the latest edition of the East Rock Record, a top-notch newspaper produced at K-8 East Rock Community & Cultural Studies Magnet School under the guidance of journalist Laura Pappano.

The issue includes more about the new principal, alum Sabrina Breland, as well as insights into “strict” versus “nice” teachers, the impact of tech on student performance, project-based learning,  and school visits by Hispanic firefighters and a Pulitzer Prize-winning illustrator.

Thank goodness for student reporters and student publications.  It’s a shame the BOE cant get it together like some of these kids.  The school system costs the city a bundle but it’s in need of fixing.  I say pay more to good teachers and unload some of the administration.  I will be interviewing teachers and principals for good ideas.  Public ed. here is hurting.
