Anything that impacts the city and any negotiations that involve the city should be open and transparent to the residents of the city. The mayor, the city staff and the alder persons work for the residents of the city and are paid with the taxpayers money, and are therefore accountable to the residents. Elicker and everyone who is in city government owe transparency on all city government dealings and I'm glad the mayor finally realized that and I hope that he will in the future tell anyone who wants to keep such dealings private, that when it involves city business, they are not entitled to the privacy and back room deals that the "good old boy" network style of government in previous administrations in the past operated on.

If I were someone in Gormany's Position, who sold a home in Guilford for a profit, the last place I would invest that windfall is in New Haven Homeowner's Market.

Who knows -- Maybe Gormany is renting, and putting some fiscal sense where his money is as he polishes up his resume.

You mean Tyisha Walker-Myers didn't make the cut? Does this mean Myers and the BOA's are abandoning their threat to "shut down the city"?

Hopefully these negotiations will differentiate between increasing voluntary payments to the municipal government, and making investments in the residents of New Haven. It'd be a lost opportunity if Yale merely increased its voluntary payment to the City of New Haven without also establishing performance metrics and directly benefiting New Haven's residents (directly ie investments that go to residents rather than filter through the municipal government or non-profit organizations).

I'm fascinated to see what leverage the city is willing to use. Yale is demonstrably quite content with existing situation, so sweet words are not going to convince them to change their mind, The Yale Corporation understands the situation perfectly, and has the financial and legal wherewithal to fight everything. New Haven has a significant number of tools at its disposal, but they would require a very different tack than we have seen city government take in a very long time.

I want to know how Mr. Gormany has time to negotiate with Yale when he already has TWO full-time jobs with the City: Budget Director and Acting Controller

The Governor and Lt. Governor are voting members on the Yale Corporation Board, change the state constitution to redirect resources that allow the imbalance (actual state reps. talking to each other about this issue not like what happened a few years ago where they just introduced a bill that would die immediately), provide the financial reports that display the real story of how divided the city is (supposedly New Haven's 2018-2019 Fiscal year recorded about $880 million in financial transactions however they can not provide who obtain what % by race, ethnicity, gender, neighborhood, etc.).

How can we not hold our city accountable as well? Public money is an opportunity for recipients to leverage and obtain better skills and practices to captured more money in the private sectors where there is more room to obtain wealth and other resources.

It is best to develop a better public private relationship among Yale University, Yale Hospital, and The City of New Haven. In the same way, how New Haven became a Model City for the country without correcting the racial damage from redlining, decreased public funding during the manufacturing/trades and internet/technology industrial periods we can birth a New Haven that addresses the inequity including zoning regulations that embrace regional segregation and exclusion.

So, NH Urbanism-- You want Yale to give money directly to NH residents-- isn't that called a "shakedown"??? And because why? Because NH can't get its fiscal house in order??? Ridiculous!!

No mention of Party affiliation? Wouldn't it be more impressive to confront Yale with a bi-partisan, or tri-partisan team, reflecting all viewpoints in the political arena. How disappointing. But, expected.

As long as two-thirds of our residents' income taxes go to murdering people around the world and militarizing our own society instead of providing the services and constructing the infrastructure New Haven and most other U.S. cities desperately need, the mayor and Board of Alders will never be able to run a healthy city. Yale is part of the elite fraction of 1% that benefits from this theft and should pay its share. But its $30 billion endowment pales next to the $trillion or more the US spends annually to maintain wars and a war economy. Pointing fingers at one another is counterproductive. 83% of New Haven voters agreed on Nov. 3 that we should move the money from killing to healing. Concerted action by the city and its residents demanding our Congressional representatives change that equation is long overdue.

[IF] Yale ends up investing more in New Haven through this process [AND] that investment comes in the form of increased payments to the City of New Haven, then the City ought to meet agreed upon fiscal performance goals [AND] New Haven residents ought to directly benefit (whether that comes in the form of grants, loans, skills training, fiscal counseling, etc.). It'd be a shame in the municipal government used the struggles of its residents to get more money from Yale for itself. The City of New Haven is different from the city of New Haven.

Well let's see here... we already know Yale's repetitive soundings of it's laundry list of contributions to New Haven, particularly it's labor force of New Haven residents. Specifically though, in terms of current general fund contributions...from the Oct. monthly budget report:

Of a 16.7M budget line item for voluntary contributions; only $47,030 has been paid to date. Gormany has to do a better job of timely collections before begging for more$$.
More Importantly, Yale's $9.7M line item is paid one year in advance, meaning the city really has a $13+ $9.7M + $2.5M ( Revenue Initiative) deficit.
This committee should focus of the assessor's office to first revisit the grand list in an effort to scrutinize the 50% or more claimed tax exempt properties, properties that are not protected by state law as Yale has been for decades. The assessor needs to have visions government solutions do a real on site visit to confirm these exemptions.

Let's not forget Yale pays what it wants to pay, when it wants to pay!

FacChec: Yale normally pays its voluntary contribution, due in October, in August, so the city can count the current year contribution in the prior fiscal year (ending June 30). It has done this since DeStefano needed money to fill a budget gap, and the city never made up the difference. A few years back, Marchand and the BoA caused Harp headaches by blocking building permits for a Gibbs Lab replacement. In retaliation, Yale decided it would make its payment on time, rather than early. Thus, we had the "Have Adam Call Me" incident.
