New Haven’s first African-American female mayor has thrown her support to the woman seeking to become America’s first African-American female president.
Mayor Toni Harp made that endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris this weekend. She attended a Harris reception at the home of former state treasurer and governor candidate Dita Bhargava of Greenwich.
“I applaud the strides Senator Harris has taken on behalf of working people, her efforts to expand healthcare access and affordability, her work to overhaul a misdirected criminal justice system, and her fierce determination to challenge the status quo and curb the nation’s epidemic of opioid and other substance abuse,” Mayor Harp was quoted in a statement released by her office Monday afternoon.
“Senator Harris is a seasoned champion for the ideals and values that are at the foundation of the Democratic Party: I hope to see her emerge next year as its presidential nominee.”
Three-term incumbent Harp, meanwhile, was still in the process of deciding Monday whether to continue her own reelection campaign and pursue a general election challenge to Justin Elicker, who defeated her last week in a Democratic primary.
Another mayoral candidate, independent Wendy Hamilton, has dropped out of the race, according to this story in the Yale Daily News.
