Harp Endorses Kamala Harris

Harp, Harris.

New Haven’s first African-American female mayor has thrown her support to the woman seeking to become America’s first African-American female president.

Mayor Toni Harp made that endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris this weekend. She attended a Harris reception at the home of former state treasurer and governor candidate Dita Bhargava of Greenwich.

I applaud the strides Senator Harris has taken on behalf of working people, her efforts to expand healthcare access and affordability, her work to overhaul a misdirected criminal justice system, and her fierce determination to challenge the status quo and curb the nation’s epidemic of opioid and other substance abuse,” Mayor Harp was quoted in a statement released by her office Monday afternoon.

Senator Harris is a seasoned champion for the ideals and values that are at the foundation of the Democratic Party: I hope to see her emerge next year as its presidential nominee.”

Three-term incumbent Harp, meanwhile, was still in the process of deciding Monday whether to continue her own reelection campaign and pursue a general election challenge to Justin Elicker, who defeated her last week in a Democratic primary.

Another mayoral candidate, independent Wendy Hamilton, has dropped out of the race, according to this story in the Yale Daily News.
