Mayor Toni Harp sent in the following letter seeking to clarify the financial relationship between the city and the Connecticut Open Tennis after the publication of this article in the Independent about an alders hearing.
I am writing to clarify an article that appeared in the New Haven Independent on Wednesday July 18 entitled “Tourney, Parades Stiff City on Overtime” written by Markeshia Ricks following a presentation by Michael Carter and Maggie Targrove to Alders on the Public Safety Committee. For 21 years, the City’s support of the Connecticut Open has included full Police and Fire protection which is documented in an annual agreement between the City and the tournament. Thus, the tournament does not owe the city anything for overtime or otherwise.
As Host City – and as you know, New Haven benefits significantly from the annually Connection Open Tennis – the tournament generates over $10 million annually in economic impact to the New Haven region, markets the City of New Haven around the world, and conducts year-round community outreach programs including inner city tennis, education and mentoring programs.
Thank you for providing clarification that the City’s agreement with the Connecticut Open does include Police and Fire services as well as information about just how important this tournament is to the city and the region – so we can all celebrate this annual international sporting event that so generously gives back to its Host City and begins in just three weeks time.
Best regards,
Mayor Toni N. Harp
'Host City'????
What a bunch of nonsense!! We created this self-perpetuating monster! It is a parasite!!!!
There is not a municipality in the world that would take up this underperforming, manufactured white elephant of a sporting event! The NH Open has a hard enough time finding a viable 'sponsor', let alone a some other non-existent 'host city'!
Maybe the City can put 'ownership rights' out to bid and pass the savings on to the tax-base!
(but then the Open may have to Open their books...)
