Afro-Semitic Experience Monday night in Beecher Park.

Monday evening was the pits in Westville — which was cause for celebration.

The occasion was the final installment of an annual six-week Hi-Fi Pie” pie-baking contest and live-music fest on the sloping grounds of Beecher Park outside the Westville Branch library, organized by the Westville Village Renaissance Alliance. Some of the neighborhood’s fiercest pie-bakers removed pits from all manner of fruits to compete in a season-concluding competition. This week’s contest challenged bakers to make pies from stone fruit.

Besides lining up to sample the pies …

… and patronizing Mamoun’s food truck …

… families played ping pong …

… and listened and danced to a soulful performance by the Afro-Semitic Experience, including Saskia Laroos space-exploring trumpet solos and inspired duets with clarinetist Will Bartlett.

In addition to its customary jazz-inflected reinterpretations of Negro Spiritual and Jewish liturgical songs …

… the group previewed an ambitious new work, a jazz-opera-Klezmer song cycle called Letters From The Affair.” Keyboardist Warren Byrd handled the vocals, drawn from the text of letters between Impressionist painters Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas documenting the disintegration of their friendship amid the anti-Semitism of the Dreyfus Affair.

At the event’s end, Libby Abraham (pictured above right helping to serve the masses) was declared the people’s choice winner of the evening for her peach daiquiri pie. Ranit Avni-Singer was declared the overall pie winner for the series.
