State Cops ID Slain HSC Student, Assume Control Of Investigation

Will Vasquez.

The state police Thursday afternoon identified the 14-year-old High School Community sophomore who was shot to death earlier this week as Will Vasquez.

Vasquez lived in Hamden. He was shot in the head and dropped off at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury Monday at 3:45 a.m., according to Waterbury police. He was transferred to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

It wasn’t clear at first precisely where he was shot. A release from the state police Thursday stated that investigators have determined that the shooting had occurred within the jurisdiction of the Connecticut State Police, Western District Major Crimes Unit.”

So that unit is now assuming the lead on the investigation. It is working with Waterbury, New Haven, Monroe, and Darien police, as well as the NHPD’s shooting task force, an FBI task force, and the State Police Bureau of Special Investigations. Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call (203) 696‑2569.

Students at High School in the Community gathered in the cafeteria Wednesday to share memories about the slain student, according to Anthony Fiore, a Board of Education student member who attends HSC.

It was for people who knew him,” Fiore, who said he’d never gotten to know the student, told the Independent.

Some students here are taking it pretty rough. People are reaching out, seeing if anybody needs to be talked to.”

Schools spokesperson Justin Harmon said the school has made counseling resources available.
