It’s Official: Clinton Captured 86% Of City Vote

Secretary of the State

A full 24 hours after the polls had closed and most of America had long reported official voting statistics, New Haven figured out how many of its citizens voted for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Short answer: A lot of them did.

The fuller answer: Clinton won 34,577 votes citywide, or 86.02 percent, in Tuesday’s election.

Republican Donald Trump won 4,483 votes, or 11.15 percent; Libertarian Gary Johnson, 541 votes, or 1.35 percent; and Green Jill Stein, 593 votes, or 1.48 percent.

Because of both staffing glitches and problems at the ward voting level, the Registrar of Voters Office did not complete a full official tally of the vote until about 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to Head Moderator John Cirello. Cirello said he then sent those results to the Office Secretary of the State, which posted them on its website.

However, under a new statewide reporting system, the city no longer preserved the full tally with a ward-by-ward breakdown, Cirello said. And the secretary of the state’s office did not publish a ward-by-ward breakdown on its site.

So for now we don’t have that information available. But we’ll keep working on it!

Statewide, Clinton won 812,041 votes (54.21 percent); Trump, 617,295 votes (41.21 percent); Johnson, 45,201 votes (3.02 percent); and Stein, 20,891 votes (1.39 percent).

Nationally, in case you haven’t heard, Trump won the election.
