Let’s Spend On Living”

New Haven Peace Commission member Millie Grenough: Let’s spend on living.

Vote to shift funds from the U.S. military to local governments, and tell your friends about it.

This was the message at multiple community management team meetings this month, where members of the New Haven Peace Commission pitched Dwight, Downtown and Wooster Square neighbors on a referendum on the ballot this year.

It’s meant to be the beginning of a movement,” said new Peace Commissioner Erica Holahan, who is a licensed social worker.

Holahan said that similar ballot initiatives are happening in New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

In New Haven, the referendum is on the right side of the ballot, separate from the parties and candidates. It asks whether voters want to divert dollars from the U.S. military budget to local governments for jobs, human resources and sustainable economies.

The alders unanimously voted in August to put the non-binding referendum on the ballot.

Peace Commission member Millie Grenough (pictured above) said that the green jobs focus of the jobs is important. (She, like Holahan, is trained in social work and therapy.) She said that Connecticut’s Congressional representatives often vote for military spending as an economic measure.

I’m not against veterans or the military. My dad was a vet. It’s about how do we want our money spent,” Grenough said. Let’s stop spending on war. Let’s spend on living.”

At both community management teams, no one had any questions for the peace advocates.

However, in the Downtown Wooster Square Community Management Team chat, one attendee wrote that they already voted for the referendum.

Money for books not bombs!” New Haven Free Public Library staffer Seth Godfrey added.
