A swerving, fast-moving driver slammed his Honda Accord into a utility pole and is now in the hospital, critically injured.
The crash occurred slightly before 9 p.m. Monday.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:
A caller told 911 dispatchers that an apparently intoxicated man had left a liquor store, gotten behind the wheel of a Honda Accord, and sped off on Whalley toward Blake Street.
Moments later, the driver of the car was spotted “traveling at a high rate of speed and swerving,” then ignoring a traffic red-control signal and crashing into a utility pole at Valley and Blake streets.
The 36-year-old driver was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his condition is listed as critical.
