Man Shot Dead In Newhallville

A 31-year-old Hamden man Monday afternoon became the city’s fourth homicide victim in less than three weeks of the new year.

City police spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff announced that latest homicide in an email press release sent out Monday night.

Update: The victim was identified Tuesday as Marquis Winfrey, age 31.

He wrote that on Monday at around 2:15 p.m., city police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert and 911 calls of gunfire in the area of Dixwell Avenue between Elizabeth Street and Cherry Ann Street.

A short time after the gunfire, he continued, a gunshot victim arrived by private vehicle at Yale New Haven Hospital.

That victim, a 31-year-old Hamden man who has not yet been identified, was later pronounced deceased.

Duff wrote that New Haven and Hamden police officers held a crime scene for several hours, and that the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the New Haven Police Department at 203 – 946-6304. Callers may remain anonymous.

Police are also investigating the shooting deaths of Alfreda Youmans, 50, and Jeffrey Dotson, 42, whose bodies were discovered earlier this month inside a Winthrop Avenue apartment. Police are also investigating the shooting death of Jorge Osorio-Caballero, 32, who was shot and killed and Fair Haven Saturday evening.
