U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro said she’s going back to a toxic environment” when she returns to Congress, but she’s not going to stand by and wait for people to do nothing.

I’m going to make things happen,” she vowed.

Democrat DeLauro was easily reelected to her 13th term in Congress Tuesday. She was triumphant and thankful as she made her way into the Shubert Theater for a victory celebration as a couple of hundred supporters chanted Rosa! Rosa! Rosa!”

When she gets back to Washington, D.C. I’m focusing on getting people jobs, getting them the training they need for jobs. Better wages, equal pay for equal work, affordable child care. These are the issues.”

In her speech she cited as upcoming priorities raising the federal minimum wage and helping women to achieve wage parity. She said all too often women are stuck in low wage jobs that don’t pay enough to help their families, and government has a role to play in making sure people have access to education.

DeLauro defeated Republican James Brown, a math teacher from Stratford, whom she thanked for running a spirited campaign based on his convictions.

Brown said in a statement that running for offices forces a person to learn a lot in a short amount of time. He declared himself proud of the principled, conservative campaign” he ran.

I didn’t receive money from special interests, and I remain beholden only to my own values,” he said. While I’m disappointed with tonight’s results, I accept the will of the voters.”

He said he hopes that DeLauro will spend her 13th term truly listening to people.”
