Alleged Thief Drives Mercedes To Home Depot

A Mercedes Benz driver was looking to pull away from the Home Depot at 1873 Dixwell Ave. with $900 worth of stolen power tools and accessories.

He didn’t succeed. Now cops are looking for him.

So reported Hamden police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said the man (pictured) attempted to steal” the merchandise from the store on Nov. 19.

A loss prevention officer intervened and was successful at recovering the stolen merchandise,” Smith wrote in a release. The person responsible for the attempted theft fled from the area in a silver Mercedes Benz.”

Smith asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Officer Scott Jason at (203) 230‑4030.

Smith also described a 4 p.m. Nov. 22 incident involving the person pictured at left:

Hamden Police responded to TJ Maxx, 2335 Dixwell Avenue on the report of suspicious activity. Investigation revealed that a 10-year-old child was shopping with his guardian. He entered a stall to use the bathroom. An unknown male asked him if he was okay.’ The child then observed the male using a cell phone to record him.

The child quickly exited the bathroom and advised his guardian of the incident. She subsequently attempted to detain the person responsible, but was unsuccessful. He was last observed fleeing on foot towards Dixwell Avenue.

Police are looking for a white male, 18 to 20 years of age, black hair, wearing a yellow shirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Paul Calamita of the Hamden Police Department Patrol Division at (203) 230‑4030.”
