Yale Cops Disciplined For Gaming On Duty

They should've been out policing the streets protecting multiple women from being groped by a gang of teenage boys.

Yale Police positions its officers (in their cars) around campus at certain hours of the day as a deterrent and to show their presence, which is much appreciated. However, 95% of the time when I walk past them in their parked patrol cars (on York street, College street, Sachem street, High street) they are in the drivers seat with their eyes glued to their cell phones. Seems like it would be better if they had their eyes out on the streets or maybe even walked a little outside their cars?

Y'all act surprised? "Defund the police" "abolish the YPD" make a police accountability bill that makes cops not want to do a thing. Pick a side - don't wait until you're a victim to cry about what they're doing. Support them or this will be the mentality of officers for the foreseen future.

I don't think all of sudden they decided not to do a thing. They just got caught this time around.
5 cops decided collectively on a whim to play CoD while on duty? But hey give them the COVID vaccine before workers that actually deal with the public on a daily basis.
YPD is one of the highest paid police departments in CT. Also, defunding the police doesn't mean what you think it means.

Amazing that cops will be subject to harsher discipline for playing a video game on duty than for beating or shooting an unarmed suspect...

New Haven teachers:

• Making $38k 4 years in with a Master's degree
  
• Lesson planning at home, no overtime
  
• Teaching in dilapidated buildings and buying their own teaching aids and even students' school supplies in some cases

• Making $70k 3 years in
  
• Great overtime and extra duty
  
• Six-figure pensions all around

  I mean yes, policing is hard work [i]for sure[/i] -- unfairly so, which is part of what "defund the police" is actually about -- but some of you people are entirely too authoritarian for your own good or anybody else's. If you love the badge so much, give police officers some credit and don't assume they're so fragile they'll just stop doing their job whenever someone starts talking about reducing funding for their department. This article is clearly about cops in an overfunded department -- so overfunded they have time to chill and play CoD -- and I'd bet good money this was happening pre-2020 as well.

Apologies if my comment was a little too obtuse for some readers. I have no doubt Yale's privately paid police are and will continue to be well-funded.

It's daft to think police are going to go out and look for trouble when you A) have a track record of punishing such behavior and B) pass laws that increase their legal exposure even for acting lawfully.

And I challenge anyone bragging about salaries and benefits to find me a single police officer hired in the last decade from New Haven that can expect a six figure retirement after 25 years. You're living in the golden past if you believe cities are still offering that kind of compensation to anyone, even those putting their lives in danger daily.

I would say the majority of the NHPD Is under the new contract. And your figures are some what accurate yes officers could receive 70% of their base salary after 30 years of service as a police officer. And an officer has to do a minimum of 20-25 years to get their pension. If some who is hired at 45 and works till 52 they would not get a pension. Yes teachers are under paid but comparing police work to teaching is a horrible comparison. Teachers work in a controlled environment...when there is an issue with someone acting up who do they call right the police. Can't remember the last time someone called a teacher when they were fighting someone or being shot at. And if people think it's a cake walk I know the NHPD is looking for cops. And this is an article about Yale cops so why bring up NHPD retirement and salaries. Compare Yale professor salaries to the Yale cops.

I'm not surprised. YPD, has little to do in the city as they only "police" the Yale area. Any actual crime that happens outside of Yale students and/or property is then forwarded to NHPD. It seems that some folks think that YPD and NHPD are one and the same and they are not. YPD officers make a much higher salary than NHPD officers, even for rookie cops. YPD officers just patrol downtown and the Yale University area, with that being said, I am not at all surprised that this happened. I'm sure it isn't the first time, and probably won't be the last. They'll just get smarter about it.
