The tipping posters are sadly misguided and aren't going to encourage anything besides people tipping worse. This us for them mentality isn't going to make any interactions with Yale students easier.

...I'm sure that I missed a few but this strategy to gain voters did incredible damage to the country (and was a big contributor to the results of the 2016 election).

Wendy: It wasn't I who did the survey, it was a professional organization and they surveyed for more than bartenders. I am not surprised at the results. Money is a proxy for power, and one thing men always want it to appear powerful. We learn this on the kindergarten playground: those who show weakness are pummeled. So, men will argue over who picks up the check, or surreptitiously pay it. If a group of men decide to share the tab, no one will have anything less than a $20 bill, so everyone rounds their share up to the nearest twenty. No one asks for change, because to do so would imply an amount less than $20 matter to you. When I go out with my conservative, male friends, a 30% plus tip is not unusual. (For a haircut, I often tip 50-66%).

I grew up VERY low income and have worked my whole life in the service industry. I paid for everything I have and help my family as well.

Stop trying to make me out to be some trust fund kid who voted for Trump. It's not who I am and it doesn't help your narrative.

When I scooped ice cream at a local shop I didn't expect families to tip. I was paid a wage and knew that going in. Any tip I received was extra in my budgeting.

When I waited tables in town I knew a lot of LOCAL NON YALIES who always came in and wouldn't tip / under tip. Although I relied on these tips for my bills I still provided the service with a smile as a tip is customary but NOT mandatory.

When I bartended in town I realized that some people didn't tip but still made their drinks.

Cut the Bull... if you don't like What you do... go work for a salaried / hourly position. You are not TRAPPED in the service industry.

There are MANY positions available in the region that are not tip based.

That might be true, but it is an un-hired, unpaid position, where I rely on my intelligence and communication skills as 'my trade', with little reward except a genuine interest in moving the 'town' forward, and being targeted for my 'voice'.
