Library Renovations Delayed; New Bids Requested

With permissionRenovations at the Blackstone Memorial Library will be delayed while re-bidding takes place in three areas of the project that came in about $500,000 over budget. The other 14 construction bid packages came in at or under budget, and will not be re-bid.

The renovation and expansion project was slated to begin in September. The total cost is $5.2 million, but the actual cost to the town is about $3.4 million because of the $1 million State Library grant and another $800,000 in capital campaign donations.

Restoring a Theatrical Legacy at the Legacy

Photo by Diana Stricker“It’s going to be amazing,” said Keely Baisden Knudsen, artistic director of the soon-to-be restored Legacy Theatre in Stony Creek.

Knudsen met with the Eagle to announce a $1.2 million donation that will kickstart their capital campaign. Plans call for restoring the theater to its 1930s look when Orson Wells and Sinclair Lewis made history there.

Stony Creek Granite to Adorn New Statue of Liberty Museum

Sean Kernan PhotoStony Creek and Guilford’s variegated pink granite, the distinctive granite used for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, will soon return to Liberty Island for its next historic honor.

This time, the granite will adorn the exterior of a new Statue of Liberty Museum scheduled to open in 2019 alongside the Statute of Liberty. The Museum, which will include a theater, is designed to tell the story of “Lady Liberty,” a universal symbol of freedom.
