Boys’ Soccer Off To Strong Start

Last year they rattled off five straight wins on their way to a 13-7-1 record and an appearance in both the SCC tournament and the Class L State Tournament before falling to no. 3 ranked Guilford 3-0 in the quarter finals. Above, co-captains Marzio Mastroianni and Ben DeMaio hustle to catch up with the ball.

Restoring a Theatrical Legacy at the Legacy

Photo by Diana Stricker“It’s going to be amazing,” said Keely Baisden Knudsen, artistic director of the soon-to-be restored Legacy Theatre in Stony Creek.

Knudsen met with the Eagle to announce a $1.2 million donation that will kickstart their capital campaign. Plans call for restoring the theater to its 1930s look when Orson Wells and Sinclair Lewis made history there.

RTM Approves Manpower Increase for Fire Department

Photo by Diana StrickerThe Branford Fire Department will increase staffing with eight new firefighters; the town is purchasing a 14-acre property on Tabor Drive; and the second contract has been approved for town supervisors and department heads.

With bipartisan action, the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) approved all three proposals by a unanimous vote of the 25 members present Wednesday night. The RTM’s Ways and Means Committee and the Public Services Committee previously voted unanimously in favor of the proposals.

SBA Scores Show Little Improvement

The results of the Smarter Balance Assessments for 2017-2018 for the Branford School District show flatline or slightly lower results than previous years.

The tests are designed to measure students’ progress based on Common Core State Standards designed to improve teaching and learning. Tests are given to elementary and middle school students in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

Field Hockey Alumni, Families Honor McGuirks

All photos by Bill O'BrienA large number of former players and many parents recognized legendary coaches Cathy and John McGuirk at a casual get together at the Branford Yacht Club recently for their years of dedicated coaching of the Branford field hockey teams.

Cathy McGuirk is the longest serving head coach in Branford sports history, according to co-athletic director Jake Palluzzi She coached the Hornets continually for 41 years. Her husband John is close behind, assisting his wife for 38 years.
