Halloween is in the air and there are a lot of activities for those who love this spooky time of year. Lay in the Snickers and Reese’s! Enjoy the abundant local talent, as well. Musicians and artists have so much to offer in the upcoming weeks, especially the annual Shoreline Arts Trail. Most of all, be sure to vote on Nov. 6. Got a cool event? Friday, Oct. 26

Halloween Party & Coat Drive

The Sin Sisters will host a Halloween Party and Coat Drive at the Owenego Inn, 40 Linden Ave., Friday night, Oct. 26, from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.

This is the fifth year the musical group has hosted the event.

Find Abundance

A collection of new paper cuttings by Branford artist Martha Link Walsh will be on display at the Willoughby Wallace Library, 146 Thimble Island Road from Friday, Oct. 26 to Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Walsh and fine art photographer Gaile Ramey will host an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, as part of this joint exhibit sponsored by the Friends of the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library.

Walsh will also give an Artist’s Talk at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, to discuss her inspiration and process for the two dozen images on display.

Ramey’s photographs highlight her observations of the vital, sublime power of natural phenomena surrounding us.

Friday, Oct. 26-Saturday, Oct. 27

Haunted Isle

Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27, are the final days to take part in the Haunted Isle at Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven; the event runs from 7 to 10 p.m.

The Haunted Isle experience consists of a short trolley car ride (about 5 minutes each way), which will drop off participants at the Isle itself, where they will be walking along an unlit trail through the woods where ghouls, goblins and ghosts will do their best to scare them. Plan to spend at least an hour at the Isle exclusive of time spent waiting in line. See the online information for cautionary

Saturday, Oct. 27

Halloween Hysterics At Henry’s

Learn the secrets that lurk behind the formidable stone walls of Connecticut’s oldest house on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when the Henry Whitfield State Museum presents Halloween Hysterics at Henry’s.

Participants can see the 379-year-old Whitfield House in a new light – or rather, in no light. The lights will be off as visitors explore the entire building. The basement, usually closed to the public, will have a few surprises for those brave enough to venture there. Bring a flashlight to investigate all the nooks and crannies.

In the museum’s Visitor Center, enjoy some candy, craft a gravestone or gargoyle out of clay, and do some coloring. In the Education Center, learn about the Guilford Green graveyards, the Whitfield connection to the Salem witch trials, and the origins of Halloween traditions in the display Holidaze: The Real Story of Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas.”

This program is recommended for ages 6 and older. Admission is $6 and free for ages 12 and younger. Parking is free at the museum, located at 248 Old Whitfield Street. Spirit Medium/Clairvoyant Helps Raise Funds for Homeless Cats 

Avant Garde Holistic Center will sponsor An Evening with Spirit Medium Althea DePascale, a fundraising event benefiting Branford Compassion Club on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Avant Garde Holistic Center, 328 East Main St. 

DePascale is a spirit medium who has the ability to connect with loved ones and pets who have crossed over to the other side. Halloween Pawty

A Dress Up Halloween Pawty for adults to benefit the homeless animals at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter takes place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Rossitto’s Ristorante, 284 E. Main St.

The cost is $30 per ticket, which includes hors d’oeurves and one glass of wine. There will be a 50/50 and prizes for costumes. For more information, go to Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter on Facebook.

Wednesday, Oct. 31

Light the Night

Halloween night in Branford will feature Light the Night,” a safe, fun and free family night encouraging kids to come out dressed up. There will be candy, food, live music and much more on the Branford green. It all kicks off with the night’s official lantern lighting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Light the Night” is being organized by Shoreline Community Church with support from the town, local businesses and sponsoring organizations. The committee has lined up representatives of local businesses around Main Street to help provide candy for kids and sponsorships from three local restaurants to serve up free hot cocoa, hot dogs and chili on the green. There will also be games and activities for kids to enjoy.

Saturday, Nov. 3

Opening Reception Massimino, Brown

An opening reception for John Massimino and Sally Brown will be held at the Branford Art Center, 1229 Main St., on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Massimino, retired teacher of 20 years at Paier College of Art, will show his recent acrylic paintings in the studio gallery. He is a member of many art associations and is listed in Who’s Who in the East, USA, The Dictionary of International Biography, and Men of Achievement. He is part of the NASA Team of Artists and spent many years in Italy painting. 

Gallery artist Sally Brown will display for the first time her large collection of seascapes done in acrylic or pastel as well as her animal and bird paintings.

Sunday, Nov. 4

Bluegrass Band Plays Branford

The Korey Brodsky Band, honored by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), will perform with his band Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m. at Pilgrim Hall, First Congregational Church of Branford, 1009 Main St. The event is a scholarship fundraiser sponsored by the Musical Art Society of Branford. The Alice Collins Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Branford student majoring in music. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for members of the Society, and $6 for students. 

Just 19 years old and a perennial contest winner, Brodsky plays guitar and mandolin. He released his debut album Cruizin’” in October 2016. Joining Brodsky will be his father, Rick Brodsky, who has played bass for numerous regional and national bluegrass bands, and fiddlers Ella Jordan and Ethan Hawkins.

BYO Committee Meeting

Merchants are invited to meet with members of the BYO (Bring Your Own reusable bag) Branford committee at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Willoughby Wallace Library, 146 Thimble Islands Road, Stony Creek.

The committee is interested in public feedback – both positive and negative comment – on the draft of the proposed ordinance to limit the use of thin plastic bags for checkout by merchants. Saturday, Nov. 10

Folk Music Society Hosts Bill Staines

One of the most popular performers to appear at Branford Folk through the decades, Staines performed at 40th anniversary year and returns at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, for its 45th year. The concert takes place at the First Congregational Church on the Green, 1009 Main St.

A major supporter in the organization’s early years, he appeared for 18 consecutive years from 1974 to 1991.

Now, well into his fifth decade as a performer, he has rightly gained an international reputation as a gifted songwriter and performer. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65,000 miles annually. He has recorded 27 albums and there are three published collections of his songwriting that remain in print.

Shoreline Arts Trail

The Shoreline Arts Trail’s 17th annual Open Studios Weekend will feature 30 studios in Branford, Guilford, and Madison, on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11.

This juried event includes award-winning artists and their work in their studios. Artists who work in pottery, clay, stone, glass, metal, fiber, sculpture, and more, will be available for one-on-one discussions of their work.
