Driver Dies After Crashing Into Tree

A longtime waiter at Lenny’s and Su Casa restaurants in Branford died Sunday after his pick-up truck crashed into a large tree on South Montowese Street.

Police said that Gerald Peterson, 54, known as Jerry” to the many diners he served over the years, was travelling south on South Montowese Street when his truck swerved off the right hand side of the road and into the tree.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of 133 South Montowese St. at about 4:15 p.m., just as darkness neared. Peterson lived on Hopson Avenue in Branford.

Branford paramedics took Peterson to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead.

Capt. Geoffrey Morgan said the South Central Connecticut Traffic Unit (SCCTU), a special unit that investigates car accidents, spent about four hours at the scene gathering information. The SCCTU will undertake an accident reconstruction.

Branford police officer Christopher Romanello, the crash investigator assigned to the SCCTU, said the police know that witnesses, neighbors and other motorists stopped to render aid and assist Mr. Peterson prior to emergency personnel arriving.” He asked those who stopped by to help to please call the police at 203 – 481-4241.

The medical examiner’s office is expected to investigate medical factors that may have contributed to Peterson driving off the road. Tests to determine alcohol level at the time of death will also be performed, Capt. Morgan said.
