Little League season opened two weeks ago and the way the weather has been since then, they may not finish until September. That’s not likely to happen, but they already have some games to make up because of so many rainy days.

“Pay attention, guys.”

Opening day was held for the 68th year in a row. What started years ago with one field, now has a complex of six fields including a concession stand in the center. Sometimes getting started requires perspective.

Named after former First Selectman John Sliney, it has been known as John B. Sliney Park since 1976. It consists of the original Sampson Field next to the entrance of Foote Park and five additional fields added over the years.

The opening day ceremonies consisted of a parade of teams that lined the infield, the National Anthem sung by four members of the Branford High School Music Makers, greetings by league president Scott Villa, followed by comments from league vice president Don Lawrence, who including time with his dad years ago, has been involved with Branford Little League for 48 years in various capacities including assistant coach, coach, board member, and commissioner.

The day is a learning experience for all.

Can I have your attention please?“said the speaker to the youngsters who were busy with other things.

Trophies were presented to last year’s championship teams in the Coach Pitch,” AAA, and Majors Divisions, followed by the first pitch being thrown out by Recreation Director Alex Palluzzi, (pictured) who was recognized by Lawrence for the work he and his staff have done to make the six fields in the complex such high quality that they are requested by the Little League district to host district playoff games.

That was really nice,” said Palluzzi of his moment in the sun. It was exciting standing on the mound getting ready to throw the first pitch,” which he did to his nephew Jakie. I’m glad I didn’t throw it wild or into the dirt,” he added.

Games were played that day on the different fields, and the season will somehow end on time in June, in time for some Branford teams to play against the other district teams in an effort to bring home a title.
