North Haven Deputy Police Chief Jonathan R. Mulhern (pictured), a highly respected and experienced supervisor in diverse areas of police work, is expected to be named Branford’s next deputy police chief, Police Chief Kevin Halloran told the Eagle Monday.
Mulhern emerged as the top candidate in a field of 26 candidates seeking the department’s second highest spot. In recent months, seven of them were interviewed by the Police Commission, which was briefed on the Mulhern hiring last night. Mulhern was offered the post on condition that he meet certain standards and requirements in the hiring of a lateral transfer police officer, Halloran said at the meeting. All the candidates were screened by other police chiefs from around the state to make certain they were qualified for the position.

A 19-year-old from Bridgeport who was arrested last week along with four juveniles was driving a stolen car in Pine Orchard when it crashed into a police cruiser. He now faces eight felony charges in Superior Court in New Haven, court records show.
Patrick P. Geyer, 19, of 728 Arctic St., Bridgeport, along with four male juveniles were in a car stolen in Stamford when it crashed into a police cruiser operated by Officer John Abely at about 9:45 p.m. on April 6. Abely was subsequently placed on light duty. He was not seriously injured. The police vehicle was damaged.

Branford Police captured two juveniles in a stolen white Scion TC early this morning after they collided with a police cruiser near an underpass at the Eel Pot restaurant on Meadow Street. The cars collided left fender to left fender.
Neither Sgt. Dominic Eula, the driver of the police cruiser, nor the juveniles were injured, Capt. Geoffrey Morgan said. Eula was briefly trapped in his car.
The two cars collided as Sergeant Eula attempted to enter Indian Neck Avenue from Meadow Street and the fleeing vehicle collided with Eula’s cruiser. One of juveniles was captured after Eula left his car via the passenger door and apprehended him in the rear seat of the fleeing vehicle. One juvenile suspect was captured a short time later by Ace, the East Haven Police Department’s K-9.

A longtime waiter at Lenny’s and Su Casa restaurants in Branford died Sunday after his pick-up truck crashed into a large tree on South Montowese Street.
Police said that Gerald Peterson, 54, known as “Jerry” to the many diners he served over the years, was travelling south on South Montowese Street when his truck swerved off the right hand side of the road and into the tree.

A message left on an answering machine at Branford High School just before 9 a.m. that an explosive “may be placed” in the school led this morning to the evacuation of the school.
Branford Police called in the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad to search the school.By early afternoon Police Chief Kevin Halloran said the school “is safe to reopen.”

A 36-year-old East Haven man, who allegedly rammed a Branford police officer’s cruiser as he was fleeing a parking lot in his car following a tire theft at Al Mac Motors II, was taken into custody Wednesday on an arrest warrant, police said.
The tire theft took place on July 5 at the tire store, at 117 North Main St. According to Branford Detective Lieutenant John Finkle, the suspect, identified as Janssen Padilla of East Haven, was driving his gray Jeep Cherokee when he rammed into the officer’s cruiser as it was entering the parking lot.

Branford police confiscated eight kilograms of narcotics, a combined mixture of Fentanyl and Tramadol, both opioids and valued on the street market at $2 million, after stopping a car with very heavily tinted windows Wednesday.
They arrested Carlos Albert Hernandez-Salazar, 27, of Canton, Ohio, after Officer Josef Herten stopped the car because of the windows. The stop occurred at about 5:15 p.m. but police did not say where in Branford or where on a highway it took place. Maria Zambrano, 20, was driving. Their two children were with them.
