nothin Ruth Thomas, 88 | New Haven Independent

Ruth Thomas, 88

Mrs. Ruth E. Thomas, 88, of New Haven, CT. was summoned home to our Heavenly Father, on October 16, 2019, at Branford Hills Health Care Center, Branford, CT

Ruth was born on February 26, 1931, to the late James Stanley and Mildred Heyward.

Ruth was a lifelong resident of New Haven and a proud member of the Fair Haven community. She was a descendant of William Garrett, an original oysterman whose resting place is the historic Fair Haven Union Cemetery. Ruth was predeceased by her adopted parent, Ruth Thompson White, an adopted sister Marian Jones, and by her ex-husband, Al Thomas.

Ruth was educated at Wilbur Cross High School (previously Commercial High) and later worked at the family business, Thomas Cleaners, where she utilized her skills as a seamstress and contributed to the business operations.

In following years, after raising 5 children to adulthood, she was self-employed in various local establishments using her expertise in alterations.

She was a selfless and spiritual person who was an early member of Community Baptist Church in New Haven. Ruth was a role model of honesty, integrity and kindness for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was kind, thoughtful and could bring a smile to all who met her.

Ruth was always a lover of music, from the days of the Five Satins to Yanni, the Righteous Brothers and everything in between. She was a proud supporter of her two sons who are local musicians.

After retirement from outside employment, she could be found at her Singer sewing machine fulfilling special requests for family and friends. In later years, Ruth loved to watch the boats on the Quinnipiac River and greet her neighbors, bringing a ray of sunshine to every new day.

The family would like to thank the staff at Branford Hills for their kind and compassionate care of our loved one.

Ruth leaves to cherish fond memories, daughters, Diane R. Christie, of Chesapeake, VA. and Debra K. Thomas (Jerome); sons, Allen (Deborah) Thomas, of New Haven, CT, Richard (Renee) Thomas, of West Haven, CT, and David J. Thomas, of New Haven, CT;
9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

A celebration of her life will take place Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthews UFWB Church at 400 Dixwell Ave, New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Wednesday at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel St, New Haven, CT.
