Florence Schorske Wald, 91, former Dean of the Yale School of Nursing and founder of the first hospice in the United States died on Saturday Nov. 8 at home as she had helped many do before her. Wald advocated for compassionate care for the dying across the country brought hospice to Connecticut prisons and has been a mentor and role model to several generations of nurses. She was pre-deceased by her husband and partner in creating hospice Henry Wald. She is survived by her son Joel Wald daughter Shari Vogler their spouses and her five grandchildren. She is also survived by her older brother historian Carl Schorske and his family. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Battell Chapel at Yale 400 College Street New Haven. Donations in her memory can be made to the hospice of your choice or the Yale School of Nursing. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial 493 Whitney Ave. New Haven.
