James A. (Jimmy) Dixon, Jr.
James A. Dixon Jr. was born May 9, 1959, in New Haven to James Dixon Sr. of North Charleston, South Carolina. and the late Lillian Jackson Dixon. Mourning his passing is his wife, Ina Caesar-Dixon and his sons Jesse and Alexander of West Haven Connecticut. He also leaves behind his father, sisters Veronica James (Michael) of Chino, California, Laurie Johnson (Timothy) of Mobile, Alabama, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Besides his family, Jim’s great love of the sea was a driving force in his life. At the time of his death, he was a Purser with the Port Jefferson Ferry in Bridgeport, working on upgrading his Captain’s License. Prior to this position, he served as a Maritime Captain (U.S. Coast Guard) for the City of Bridgeport’s Regional Vocational Aquaculture School and as a Pilot for the Bridgeport Harbor Master. During his lifetime, he also worked as a Dock Master at the Oyster Point Marina in New Haven. He started on the Liberty Belle in 1981 as a Deckhand/First Mate and received his Maritime Captain’s License on April 1, 1985. He served as a Relief Captain on the Quinnipak for Schooner, Inc., and as a basic seamanship and boat-building instructor for the Sound School of New Haven. He also served as a juvenile detention officer for the State of Connecticut. He graduated from the Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, New Hampshire in 1977, and went on to continue his education at the University of Delaware, South Central Community College, and the Tidewater School of Navigation in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Elks, East Rock Lodge 141, I.B.P.O.E. of W New Haven, served as the Registrar/Vice President of the West Haven Youth Soccer League, and Fundamental Youth Basketball League. He was a coach for both of his son’s soccer and basketball teams. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday September 30th, 2006 11:00 am at the Dixwell Avenue United Church of Christ 217 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven. The Elks tribute will precede the service at 10:30 a.m. Services in care of Howard K Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel Street New Haven, CT. Erania J. Hyman, 59, of Victory Drive, New Haven, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass, while on vacation. Born May 16, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Geraldine Johnson and mother of two daughters, Laticia A. and Tashawna L. Hyman, both of New Haven. Ms. Hyman also leaves two brothers, Lawrence Johnson, Jr. of Lancaster, California, and Walter Johnson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and three sisters Alva Joyce Hammond of Kansas City, Missouri, Patricia A. Mack, Deborah F. Clairborne and Denise H. Carter all of New Haven. John W. Ellison, Jr.
Mr. John W. Ellison, Jr., 68, of Edgewood Avenue, New Haven, passed away on Friday September 22, 2006. Born December 12, 1937 in Haynesville, Louisiana, he was the son of the late John W. Ellison, Sr. and Cora Ellison. He was formerly employed by Winchester-Olin and worked for the United States Postal Service for the past 35 years until his illness. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Dorothy A. Ellison, daughter Alicia D. Ellison of New Haven, and two grandchildren, Jade Ellison and Rushon Ellison. Annie L. Scruggs, 74, formerly of 66 Orange St, New Haven, died, Sunday, September 10, 2006, in The Hospital of Saint Raphael. Daughter of the late Pickney and Leona Scruggs, wife of Henry King of New Haven and mother of two sons, Dana C. Scruggs and Thomas J. Burroughs both of New Haven. Mrs. Scruggs also leaves one brother, Dan Ladson, and one sister, Albertha Murray, both of Savannah, GA. She was predeceased by daughter Brenda Scruggs-Mercer and several sisters. Annie leaves to mourn her loss four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and one very close friend, Marian Mitchell of Savannah, GA. Pearl E. “Bama” Cowan-Richardson
Pearl Cowan-Richardson, 60, entered into rest on September 6th, 2006, at her daughter’s residence in New Haven. Mrs. Richardson was born July 17th, 1946, in Clinton, N.C. She was the daughter of Willie T. Cowan of Garland, N.C., and the late Margaret Herring. She leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter, Venetia Richardson-Armfield and son-in-law Jeffrey Armfield. Ms. Richardson also leaves three brothers, Willie C. and Herman L. Cowan of Garland, N.C., Vernon L. Cowan of New Haven and one adopted brother, Joseph Vaughn of West Haven. She also leaves two sisters, Marie Peterson of Lucuma, N.C., and Brenda Cowan of West Haven, three grandchildren and ex-husband, Craig Richardson of New Haven, and a host of relatives and friends.
