Melvin Levern Davis
Mr. Davis died at Stamford Hospital of injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident, Thursday, August 3, 2006. Melvin L. Davis was born on March 18, 1945 in Derby, CT to the late Bettie L. Davis. His brother Leonard Davis predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Arlene G. Davis, his son Anthony L. Davis both of New Haven and his daughter, Yong Suk Boose of Radcliff, KY. He also leaves behind his father Henry Davis, aunt Ruby Allen, his brother Rhett Davis and sister Margaret L. Maynard all of New Haven, seven grandchildren, Nichole, Margaret, Theresa, William, Nicholas, Christopher and Jordan, and two great-grandchildren Jaylyn and Milhouse, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Melvin was a graduate of Wilbur Cross High School class of 1963 after which he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served his country well in the Vietnam War and was a retired Veteran. Upon returning home Mr. Davis spent a short time employed by the Connecticut State Police and then joined the State of Connecticut Department of Correction. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and retired in 1994 with 23 years of service. Upon his state retirement, Mr. Davis joined the Yale New Haven Police Department where he was employed at the time of his death. Among his many awards and accomplishments, Melvin was a member of I.B.P.O.E. Of W. East Rock Lodge #144, Widow Sons #1 PHA, Hartford Consistory #80, Royal Arch Masons Eureka Chapter #1, Eureka Chapter #2 O.E.S. and Arabic Temple #40. He was also one of the original founders of the State of Connecticut Department of Correction Honor Guard under the leadership of Commissioner Raymond Lopes. A wake will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2006, from 5 p.m. to 9 pm at St. Matthews UFWB Church 400 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven, CT and the home-going service will be held at the church on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 11:00 am. Bernard Mitchell
Bernard Mitchell, 52, of New Haven, CT, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 30, 2006, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the son of the late George Mitchell and Thelma Holmes. Bernard was born July 21, 1954, in Columbia, SC. He leaves to cherish his memory, a daughter Shayna Phillips of Atlanta, Ga., and a son Samuel Ratchford of New Haven, CT, 9 sisters Ella Mitchell and Carolyn (Rick) Harris of New Haven, CT, Georgia Rumph of Orangeburg, SC and Barbara Wright of Goose Creek, SC, Juanita (Alphonso) Sumpter of Russellville, SC Lucille (James) Sellers of Boneau, SC, Ann (Gilbert) Gilliard, Willie Ann (Esau) Holmes, Ida Lee (Jerry) Campbell of Stephen, SC; 5 brothers Robert Holmes of New Haven, CT, David Holmes of West Haven, CT, John Henry and George (Annie) Mitchell, Jr, of Jacksonville, FL, Tony (Lucy) Holmes of St. Stephen, SC; one grand daughter Equality Larona Phillip, many nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends. Bernard was educated in the New Haven Public School System. He was a former employee of the City of New Haven where he worked in the Public Works Department. In addition to his parents, Bernard was predeceased by a son Laron Phillips, 5 brothers William Mitchell, Eddie, Willie, Johnnie, and Jerome Holmes. Frances Hood Armour
Frances Hood Armour, 78, of New Haven passed away July 25, 2006 at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was born September 12, 1927, in Forston, GA, daughter of the late John and Susie Hood. She was the widow of Arthur Armour, II. She leaves her son, Arthur James Armour, III and daughter Jeanette Hood both of New Haven, 1 brother, Matthew Thomas of Dayton, OH, 3 sisters; Mamie Kornegay and Daisey Chambers both of New Haven, and Patricia Ann Wooten of Columbus, GA, 25 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by daughters Yvonne Thompson, Joann Thomas, Lisa Armour, Mary Lee Armour, and Rose Mary Taylor, one sister. Sueie Mae Boddie A Celebration of her life will be held Monday, July 31, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Pitts Chapel UFWB Church 64 Brewster Street in New Haven. Robert Lee Vaughn
Robert Vaughn, 50, died Tuesday, July 25th 2006, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born in Montgomery, Al. on March 25th 1956 to the late Johnnie Vaughn and Arthelia Vaughn of Wallingford, CT. He was employed as a “roll tender” at Northeast Graphics. Robert leaves to mourn his beloved wife Grace Roberts Vaughn, daughters Robin, Kylie, Monica, and Ices Vaughn all of New Haven, brothers Larry Packer (Shirley), John Watts (Sandra), Joseph (Bonita) and Carlton (Renee) Vaughn and Reginald Vaughn (Estelle) of Pflugerville, TX, step-children William Roberts (Tracy), Luwan Durant (Robert), Tremonishia, Daiesha and Fantasia Rodas, and 13 grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday July 30th, 2006 at 6 p.m. at Beulah Heights Church at 782 Orchard Street in New Haven.
