Mayme%20Graves0001.jpgMayme Factory Graves

Early Sunday morning, June 29, 2008, God called home one of his angels, Mayme Factory Graves, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

Mayme was born October 11, 1928 in McAlester, Oklahoma – the fourth of eight children and first daughter of Oscar and Reba Factory; a family with African American and Native American lineage. Her father was a farmer and an entrepreneur, who established Factory’s Bar-B-Q Restaurant, which was widely recognized as one of the best in Oklahoma. Mayme’s paternal grandfather, Neely Factory, was a trailblazer and an authentic Black cowboy, becoming one of the first African Americans to be appointed an U.S. Deputy Marshall in the early 1900’s by President William Taft.

After graduating from McAlester’s Toussaint L’Ouverture High School, Mayme matriculated at historically black, Langston College (now University) in Oklahoma, where one of her teachers was the brilliant Melvin B. Tolson, whose tremendous contributions were recently chronicled in the film, “The Great Debaters”. It was at Langston, where Mayme had two life changing experiences. She met and married Clifton E. Graves, an administrator at the college and she also befriended Edwin and Maye Edmonds, a friendship that lasted nearly 60 years.

Shortly after the birth of their first child, Clifton, Jr., the young Graves family relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Clif Sr.‘s hometown. There, in between giving birth to Cathy, Donna and Eddie, Mayme resumed her professional career as a teacher and guidance counselor in the public school system. Winston-Salem was also where Mayme become socially active with memberships in organizations such as the Links, Inc., Jack & Jill, Inc., local Bridge and Pinochle clubs and a faithful member of the Middlefork Christian Church. She was also involved in Voter’s Registration efforts with the NAACP of Winston-Salem during the turbulent 1960’s.

In 1969, at the behest of close friend, Reverend Edmonds, then pastor of the New Haven’s Dixwell Avenue United Church of Christ, the Graves family relocated to Connecticut to pursue professional opportunities. Here, Mayme became a fixure in the New Haven Public Schools, teaching 3rd grade at Welch Annex and Truman for over 30 years. She furthered her education by pursuing her 6th year certificate from Southern Connecticut State University.

Though not a “social activist” per se, Mayme was socially active as evidence by her 35 year involvement with the Links, Inc. and various organizations/committees within the Dixwell Church community, notably the Usher Board.

Besides her devotion to her family and friends, Mayme’s great passion was bargain shopping. Indeed, she became so adept at negotiating and perfecting the art of the deal, that those close to her dubbed her the “Queen of Consignment Shops and Tag Sales”. She’s also remembered as always being stylish and classy, yet remaining down to earth.

Mayme was a loving Mama to her children; a doting “Grand Mayme” to her grandchildren; a devoted spouse to her late husband; a dedicated sister, aunt and cousin to her family. To others, she was Aunt Mayme or Ms. Mayme to the Dixwell Church community, to new teachers, to anyone relocating from the South, to all childhood/college friends of her children and to the children of her friends. Her heart and home were always open.

Mayme was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband and four brothers – Cecil, John, Luther and Clarence. She leaves to celebrate her life and mourn her passing; children – Clifton Jr., Cathy, Donna and Eddie; grandchildren – Thema, Brandon and Malik; siblings – Fred, James and Thelma Meadows; sisters-in-law – Mary and Marjorie; brother-in-law – Paul Meadows; daughters-in-law – Sylvia and Elana; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, extended family and friends, all spanning across the US, but especially in Oklahoma, North Carolina and Connecticut.

Homegoing services will be held on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at the Dixwell Avenue United Church of Christ, 217 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven. Viewing will be from 2pm – 4pm, with services immediately following at 4pm. In keeping with Mayme’s wishes, the burial services will be in McAlester, Oklahoma on July 10, 2008 and a memorial service is also being planned in Winston-Salem, NC. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to: Maye and Edwin Edmonds Scholarship Fund c/o The Community Foundation of New Haven 70 Audubon Street New Haven, CT 06510. Essie M. Liburd was born in Effingham, South Carolina. She was the youngest of seven children born to Amanda and Damon Myers. After graduating from Florence County Public Schools, Essie moved to New York City to live with her sister, Lucille.

New York is where she met and married George Daniell Liburd. After a short stint in the city, they moved to New Haven, CT. She helped her husband launch a dry cleaning business in Ansonia before going to work for Winchester Manufacturing Co., where she remained for 30 years before retiring.

A strong, determined woman, Essie preferred the simple life. Her days revolved around her husband, children and a few close friends. After her children became older, she would travel with her husband, Veronica and Tony Mason, Enid and Doug Black and several other couples. She also enjoyed a memorable 10-day trip to Paris with her daughter Sondra.

In her younger years, she was an avid bowler having won a few local and regional competitions. She was also a member of St. Ann’s-St. Theresa’s Guild, a civic group under the auspices of St. Luke’s Church. Essie was an active sponsor in The Park School Endowment Fund and the family fund at the University of Maryland, where her granddaughter attends college.

Known as a phenomenal cook throughout the years, Essie especially loved to bake casseroles and cakes. She was always up for trying her friends’ new recipes. She also loved plants and flowers. You could bet some corner of her home and sun porch had something green and colorful growing. She loved Larry King and UNCONN’s women’s basketball team, which she would watch relentlessly. She’d yell and cheer like she was in the stands.

Left to mourn her loss are sons: Gordon Alexander of Cheshire and Stephen Ernest of Hamden, a daughter Sondra Liburd Jordan of Columbia, MD and a sister Cleopatra Kelly of Florence, SC. She leaves five grandchildren: Brian Liburd, Stacey Johnson, Traci Oh, Stephen Edwards, Milan Jordan and six great grandchildren.
