Eddie DuBose, Sr.
Mr. Eddie DuBose, Sr., 79, of New Haven, died Saturday, December 9, 2006, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Born August 10, 1927, Mr. DuBose is the son of the late Eddie DuBose and Carrie Williams DuBose. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth DuBose. He was employed by Yale New Haven Hospital prior to his retirement and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He is survived by a daughter, Tara Jee Wali (Patricia DuBose) son Eddie DuBose, Jr. (Linda); and a step-son Eugene Dixon (Nancy); all of New Haven; sisters Louise Howard of New Haven and Katherine Taylor of California. He also leaves to mourn nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Debra DuBose; a brother, David DuBose; and a sister Lizzie Mae Morris. Irving “Poppy” Brown
Irving “Poppy” Brown entered into rest at the age of 81, on December 6, 2006 following a long illness. Irving Brown is the son of the late Joseph and Miriam Brown. He was the 6th born of seven children. Irving was a lifelong resident of New Haven/Hamden. He served in the U.S. Army overseas during WWII along with 3 of his brothers. After the war he attended Bloomfield College and the University of New Haven where he studied Business Administration and Community Psychology. A caring and devoted man he sought employment with the social services agencies of New Haven; Community Progress, Inc.; New Haven Redevelopment Agency and New Haven Housing Authority. With his faith and dedication he was well loved and able to make a difference in the lives of many. Irving received numerous awards for his exemplary work ethic. Some of his awards include: The Board of Alderman Official Citation, Employee of the Month New Haven Housing Authority; Recognition of outstanding leadership National Council of Negro Women, Inc.; Dedication letter from Mayor Biagio DiLieto; letter of appreciation from U.S. Representative Rosa L. DeLauro; Father of the Year; and an award from St. Luke’s Parish for many years of service on various committees, and most recently a special award from the President Emeritus. His social and religious affiliations include: Black Father’s of Hamden, Elk’s Club, Antillean Society, St. Luke’s Men’s Club, Vestry, Jr. and Sr. Warden, and St. Luke’s/St. Thomas Guild. At St. Luke’s Church, Irving held the record as the longest continuous servant. Irving was predeceased by his wife Josephine White-Brown, two sisters Estelle Brown-Tillman, Sarah Marjorie-Tyson and two brothers Winston Brown and Edmund Brown. He leaves behind his sister Helen McKoy and brother William Brown. Irving leaves his lessons of life and love to his three daughters Cheryl Brown-Dickerson and husband Mark Dickerson, Gaileen Brown, Leslie Brown-Spear and husband Eric Spear; five granddaughters Monica Brown, Christine Brown, Erin Spear, Erica Spear, and Chelsi Spear and his three great grandchildren Ryan Brown, Craig Moye and Quiniese White and special friend Carol Pollard. Irving realized that every day is a special gift from God and lived each moment to the best of his ability. He prepared for tomorrow but lived for today. Ernest Leroy Lanier, 69, of Derby Avenue , departed this life on December 2, 2006. He was born October 13, 1937. to the late Ernest Lanier and Eleanor Scott in Manhattan, N.Y. William Thomas Harper
William Thomas Harper, 72, died at Yale New Haven Hospital on November 25, 2006. He was born on October 14, 1934, to the late Fate and Sadie (Boddie) Harper. He is survived by his wife Dorothy (Williams-Stanford) Harper; stepsons Kevin Stanford Sr. (Marcia), Louis Stanford Jr., adopted son Jonathan Latham (Shawne); grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Christine, Ivan, Pierre, Louis III and Cyan Stanford; siblings Olga Bryant, Frank Harper Sr. (Linda), and Sadie Wright Sibling; he was predeceased by brothers David, Fate, Samuel, Moses and Gomager, and sisters, Katherine Person, Selma Pope and Mary Thorne. He is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews and innumerable young men and women who went through the YMCA Youth Service and FOB programs under his tenure. Gregory Baskin, 35, of Winthrop Avenue died Thursday November 23, 2006, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born on December 12, 1970. in Huntington, Long Island, New York. After moving to New Haven, he was educated in the New Haven Public School System. He graduated from James Hillhouse High School in 1989 and was employed by Ben Smith Pharmacy, Milford Automatics, and was a trained Instrument Technician. He joined Mount Hope Temple at an early age where he was baptized. Ms. Melanie Spann, 56, of Congress Avenue, New Haven, died Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at her home. Ms. Alma Singleton, age 52, of New Haven, died Monday, November 13, 2006, at her home. Willis Pritchett
Willis Pritchett, son of the late Margine Pritchett Bogan and the late Whelis Pritchett, departed this life on Tuesday, October 24, 2006. He was born in Birmingham, (Capstown), Alabama on February 24, 1935. In May of 1963, he married his wife, Joyce Amos and became the proud father of Jessica Lynn Pritchett, currently of Brooklyn, N.Y. Willis and Henry Moore opened the Wil-Mpr Pharmacy in 1963 on Congress Avenue, New Haven, and eventually one on Grand Avenue. He became the principal pharmacist at Cedar Crest Regional Hospital, Dept. of Mental Health, Newington, and later became pharmacy supervisor at the Dept. of Corrections Cheshire Regional Pharmacy, in Cheshire, from 1992 to 1997, after which he retired. In 1959, he volunteered in the United States Army Reserves. He eventually attained the rank of Chief Pharmacy Officer of the 340th general hospital. After 30 years service he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel. II. He was a member of Oriental Lodge #6, F&AM, Prince Hall. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics 1995 World Games, New Haven, a board member of the Amistad Committee, New Haven, and also a board member of Sister Cities New Haven,USA/Freetown, Sierra Leone. His volunteer work extended to the New Haven Arts and Ideas in 1996 and 1998. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Lovejoy Alumni Association. Mr. Pritchett served as President of the Afro-American Historical Society and also Chairman of the New Haven Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. In 1986, being a Prince Hall Mason, he was invited to Strasbourg, France, by the International Masonic Order, CLIPSAS in celebration of their 25th Anniversary. This was indeed a great honor for Willis. He was a dedicated member of Dixwell Avenue Congregational DCC and worked faithfully in his church and was active in many organizations, such as a member of the Men’s Chorus, Amistad Choir, the Finance Board and a sunday school teacher. One of his favorite things to do was to attend Bible study. It was a time he truly enjoyed studying the Word of God. Rosalyn Scott Riggins, 73, of New Haven passed away on October 23, 2006, at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was born in Petersburg Virginia, on May 14, 1933, and was predeceased by her parents, Gertrude and Joseph Jones. She leaves children Juan (Andrea) Scott and Carolyn Scott, both of New Haven, and Mr. James Riggins of New Haven. In 1974, Rosalyn purchased C&M Grocery and successfully operated this business for many years. She is survived by brothers Joseph and Raymond Jones, both of New Haven, six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Rosalyn was predeceased by her son Taliaferro Scott (Tally) and sisters Lillian Wright and Audrey Jones-Barnes. Arthelia L. Vaughn, 75, of New Haven died Sunday October 22, 2006, at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden. Mrs. Vaughn, daughter of the late Lee Watts and Odell McFadden, was born September 16, 1931, in Natchez, Alabama. She worked as a home health aide. She leaves five sons, Larry D. Packer (Shirley) of West Haven, Johnnie V. Watts (Sandra) of Hamden, Joseph G. Vaughn (Bonita) of West Haven, Carlton Vaughn (Renee), and Reginald G. Vaughn (Estelle) of Austin, Texas; daughter-in-law Grace M. Vaughn; two brothers, Lawrence Watts of Florence, SC and Robert Watts of Orlando, FL; and five sisters, Eunice W. Johnson of New Haven, Elois Sullivan of Merced, CA, Doreathea Bailey of Florence, SC, Dorothy Burns, Flint, MI, and Helen Watts, Milton, FL; twenty-three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by son Robert Vaughn; sisters Lebia O. Rayson and Mildred A. Chambers, and brother Oliver L. Watts. Charlotte Hamilton Esdaile
Charlotte Hamilton Esdaile, 77, of New Haven, entered into rest on Thursday, October 19, 2006, at St. Raphael’s Hospital. Mrs. Esdaile was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on March 26, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Harold and Lillian (Whiting) Hamilton. She was a graduate of Southern Connecticut Teachers College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She retired from the New Haven Public School System after 35 years of employment, most recently at Timothy Dwight Elementary School in 1991. She is survived by Melvin A. Esdaile, husband of 53 years; her dearest daughter, Lydia Marie Esdaile of New Haven; her sons Melvin A. Esdaile II (Stephanie) of New Haven and Michael A. Esdaile (Sherrill) of Richmond, Virginia; her sister Alma Griffin of Fayetteville, North Carolina; five grand children and a host of family members and friends. She was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Richard Hamilton. Mr. Lee, son of the late Joe Robert Lee and Pattie Rasberry Darden, was born July 16, 1936, in Greenville, North Carolina. He was the husband of Edra Rauls Lee of New Haven.
