John Roy Carney, 85, of New Haven, departed this life September 27, 2007. Born in Bethel, NC, January 13, 1922, he was the son of the late Rev. John Henry Carney and Lena Carney. Prior to retiring, he was employed at Yale University as a Delivery Truck Driver for the dining hall. He was a member of St. Matthew’s UFWB Church. Mr. Carney is survived by his children, Tony Carney and Cynthia Ebron; a sister, Leatha C. Cotten; several grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Clayton Carney and sisters, Magnora Dolberry and Annie Mae Knight. Abraham Flynn, Sr.

Abraham Flynn, Sr., 87, of New Haven, departed this life September 21, 2007. Born in Darlington, SC, June 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Andersen Flynn, Sr. and Mel Flynn. Mr. Flynn was employed for numerous years as a Tool and Dye Operator at the former Pond Lily Co. He was a WWII Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Jonnie Flynn; his children, Sandra Flynn-Brown, Abraham Flynn, Jr. and Carlos Flynn; brothers, Alonzo “JB” Flynn, Roosevelt and Eugene Flynn; sisters, Melrose Williams and Anna Spann; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by brothers, James, Louis and Andersen Flynn, Jr.

Ruth “Ruthie” Patton, 79, of New Haven, departed this life September 9, 2007. Born in Stanley County, NC, September 27, 1927, she was the daughter of late Eugene and Daisy Patton. Ms. Patton was a member of Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church and prior to retiring, was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for numerous years. Ms. Patton leaves to cherish her memory, sisters, Elizabeth Little and Priscilla Rogers (Ronald); brothers, Carlie Lee Patton (Lois) and Melvin Patton (Ruby); godchildren, Victor “VJ” Burgin, Jr. and Eric Little; and a host of special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. William J. Van Tassell, who served the Knights of Columbus as supreme treasurer from 1982-92, passed away on Sept. 11, 2007, at the age of 80. He was first elected to the Board of Directors in August 1978, while serving as New York state deputy (1977-79).

He served as the chairman of the Board’s centennial committee, whose duties included overseeing the refurbishment of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, where the Order was founded in 1882.

He began working full time for the Supreme Council in 1981, as administrative assistant to Supreme Knight Virgil C. Dechant. Previous to that, Van Tassell worked for 30 years for IBM in upstate New York, retiring as manager of information systems.

Bringing his knowledge of computers to the Supreme Council, he helped lead the Order’s conversion to digital files for its insurance operations.

Van Tassell was born in Beacon, N.Y., on Jan. 12, 1927. In 1947 he took his First Degree, joining Trinity Council 445 in Beacon. He was a Fourth Degree member of Archbishop Hughes Assembly in the Bronx, N.Y. An enthusiastic fraternalist, he was elected grand knight of his council in 1962, and held a number of offices at the state level, including membership
director, charitable coordinator and treasurer, before becoming state deputy.

At the time of his death, Van Tassell resided in Ormond Beach, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Julia, and his two children, Patrick, of Hamden and Colleen, of Pittsburgh, PA.

Edward Lee Spruill, 82 of 103 Kensington St in New Haven, CT passed away on August 7, 2007 at Yale New Haven Hospital.  Born March 3, 1925 in Scotneck, NC, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Spruill.  Mr. Spruill leaves behind the last survivor of the family, his sister, Mary Spruill Techer; seven great nieces and nephews, eight great- great nieces and nephews and one great-great-great nephew all of New Haven, CT and New Jersey. Born in Clover, NC, on April 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Maggie Armstrong McNeil and Willie McNeil.  Lacy worked in the healthcare industry as a private duty nurse.  She is survived one son, George Moore, Jr. of New York; one brother James E. Anthony T. Gray, 35, a long time resident of New Haven, CT, passed away on August 1, 2007. Born in New Haven, CT, on July 12, 1972, he was the son of Darlene Gray and the late Raymond Mack. Anthony worked at Vonroll USA as a forklift operator.  Anthony is survived by his children Tyniesha Gray, Tyshawna Mazyck, Anthony T. Gray, Jr., Jaron Gray, Devonna Gray, Shamekia Gray, Raymond T. Gray and stepson Lewis Mazyck; mother Darlene Gray; stepfather Charles Hoover; grandmothers Betty Gray and Agatha Gray; grandfather Elwood Gray; sister Vivian Gray-Dancey; brother Dar’Ron Brown; and a host of aunts, uncles, family and friends. Anthony is predeceased by his father Raymond T. Mack; grandmother Daisy Mack; and grandfathers Raymond Mack, Sr. and James H. Edna A. Pearson was the oldest child born to Mrs. Ethel Youngblood Smith Jones and Robert Leon Smith on March 30, 1926 in North Carolina.  Edna was educated in the public school system in North Carolina. In 1939 Edna met her soul mate Charles Pearson, and they had nine children.

Edna was a long time resident of New Haven, CT.  It was also during this time, that she developed a relationship with Jesus Christ until her death. After the death of her Husband she moved to Hope Mills, North Carolina for eighteen years and then returned to New Haven where she passed away. Edna was a loving, devoted mother to her family and was a stay at home mom.

Edna was predeceased by her husband Charles Pearson, her son Charles Pearson Jr., and two brothers Robert Davis and Sammy Lee Jones. She is survived by four sons Jerry Pearson of West Haven, Apostle Verges Pearson of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Tony Pearson of New Haven, and Steven Pearson of Stamford, CT; four daughters Diane Pearson-Duncan, Michelle Pittman, Janice Ragsdale all of New Haven, CT and Marie Simonelli of North Carolina; four son in-laws Stephen Duncan, Raymond Pittman of New Haven, CT, Frank Simonelli of North Carolina and Chip Ragsdale; two daughter-in laws Debbie Pearson of West Haven and Brenda Pearson of Fayetteville North Carolina. She also leaves a host of grand children, great-grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Edna Pearson will be truly missed.  A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday August 4, 2007 at 9 am. Calling hours on Saturday will be from 8-9 am.  Both services will be held at Howard K. John Harold Greer, Sr., 69, of New Haven, departed this life July 25, 2007.
Born in New Haven, CT, December 23, 1937, he was the son of the late Clyde G. Wactor and Frank John Greer.
Mr. Greer retired from the Regional Water Authority on March 31, 2006 after 32 years of service.
He was a US Air Force veteran.
He leaves his loving wife, Joyce L. Greer; daughters, JoAnn D. Bryant (Anthony) of Kansas City, MO and Suzy R. Greer-McDowell (Dwayne) of New Haven; sons, John H. Greer, Jr. and Jason N. Greer (Stacy) both of New Haven and Peter C. Greer (Linda) of West Haven; brothers, McKinley Carter (Ruby) of New Haven and Emmett Carter of Long Beach, CA; sisters, Alice Myers of West Haven and Joan Hallums of New Haven; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Bruce Wactor and brothers, Larry and Wiley Carter. He was employed as an Operator’s Engineer. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Roslyn Williams; his children, Steven (Cynthia), Rodney (Lisa) and Stentson Keith Williams (Diane Washington), Terri Maebry (Arthur) and Cynthia Lewis; grandchildren, Keonna, Marqui’se, Tatianna, Kristopher, Arthur, Ashley, Janee, Stentson and Devante; sisters, Johnnie Mae Walters, Lula Williams, Irene Jones and Corine Bethea (Otis); other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Gaye Williams and a sister, Frances Dixon. Henry H. “Hank” Green Jr., 78 of New Haven, departed this life July 6, 2007. Born in New Haven, CT, December 23, 1928, he was the son of the late Bishop Henry H. Green Sr. and Victoria Law Green. Hank was a longtime resident of New Haven. He was a Korean War Veteran and the founder of B & L Record Store, well known as the Boss Soul Man. He was a former employee of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in NYC. Hank taught at the Connecticut Technical Career Institute for 12 years and at H & R Block Tax Service. He was also licensed to pilot private aircraft.

He is survived by sons Henry H. Green III and Jerry R. Green both of New Haven; daughters, Rennay Green Johnson of Manassas, VA and Theresa Collins of Cheraw, SC; sisters Lily Mae Lowe, Lucille DeBerry (Frank), Bernice V. Heath (Adolphus) and Barbara A. Dozier; a brother, James C. Green; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his former spouses Irene M. Green and Laura J. Green. He was predeceased by a sister Anna Mae Doggans.

Musethel Thompson

Musethel Thompson, 87, of New Haven, was called home to be with the Lord on July 7, 2007. Born in Fairmont, NC on April 30, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Anna McNair. Mother Thompson as she was affectionately known was a devoted and faithful member of Christ Chapel New Testament Church for over 40 years. She was a chartered member and one of the founding mothers of the church. She served on several auxiliary boards including missionary, deaconess, and mother. She was a dedicated worker in the Christian Union Soup Kitchen and the Nearly New Shop. She is survived by two sons, William (Joan) Thompson of New Haven, and Gene (Shirley) Thompson of West Haven; two daughters, Shirley Jackson of Hamden, and Barbara Turner of New York. Besides her children, she is survived by 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and a host of friends and relatives. She was predeceased by a daughter, Estelle McCown (Lee); and two granddaughters, Shelia McCown and Pam Turner. A home-going service for Ms. Thompson will be held Friday, July 13, 2007, at 11:00 am at Christ Chapel New Testament Church, 220 Dixwell Avenue. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-11:00 am.
