His favorite pastimes included playing and listening to classical music, his favorites including Andre Watts, Andre Boccelli, and Luciano Pavarotti, chess, cooking and painting. He leaves to cherish his memory; Wife, Barbara Hodge, of Hamden, CT; Daughters, Cheryl D. Hodge of Woodbridge, VA, and Leslie Hodge of Richmond, VA; Sons, Steven C. WIlliam Nathan Hamilton, 82, of Woodbridge departed this life March 4, 2009. He was born in New Haven, December 9, 1926. He was the son of the late Charles C. Hamilton and Catherine S. Hamilton. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Maelorie W. Hamilton, his son Mark S. Hamilton, daughter Lori H. Ricks, grandchildren Hunter J. Ricks and Cory S. Ricks. One sister, Clotilde Cross. He was predeceased by brothers Samuel and Charles Hamilton, sisters Ellen Oliver, Rachael Harris, and Gwendolyn Martin. In addition he is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of West Haven High School, Eron Prep School, Villanova University, Fordham Law School and CUNA School University of Wisconsin. He was an adjunct professor of Business Law at the University of New Haven and also served on the Board of Governors. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Knights of Columbus, Saint Martin DePorres Church, Catholic Inter-racial club, Past president of the Greater New Haven Chapter of the NAACP and Past President of the Connecticut Credit Unions. Mr. Hamilton was a civil rights activist and very active in New Haven and Woodbridge politics. Mildred Naomi Nelson Miley passed away February 20, 2009. The daughter of the late Daly Nelson and Geneva Moore was born in Salters, Kingstree, SC October 10, 1931. Mildred received a Gift of Life” from her Grandson, Timothy Peters, who donated a kidney to her. She was featured in the CT Post Newspaper as champing the importance of organ transplant. Mildred graduated with an Associate Degree from Southern CT State University. Mildred was inducted as a diligent member and later Assistant Grand Directress of the Pocahontas Temple B.Y.O.P.E. Elks of the world for many years. Mildred was a member of the Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, The National Assoc. of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc., The Negro Council of Women’s Assoc. and the Dixwell Newhallville Senior Center Club. Mildred was the founder and president of the MakeLa, Inc. formerly La, Mi, Wi, Va, Inc. Mildred was the organizer of the Walking Dolls Association and was an Entrepreneur running her own day care for over 20 years. Enid G. Sargeant died Friday 20, 2009 at the age of 79. She was the 7th of 10 children to the late Alexander Sargeant and Dorothy Libird-Huggins Sargeant. Educated in the New Haven public schools, Enid graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelor Degree in Education and a Master’s of Education Degree from Southern Connecticut University. A highly honored and celebrated elementary school teacher in New Haven for over 30 years, Enid received countless awards and recognitions, particularly as a staunch supporter of teaching the basics in an elementary school curriculum. She believed in taking her children as far as they could go. Enid’s awards included the Greater YMCA Women’s Leadership Award, the first Excellence in Teaching (Connecticut) award from the National Council of Negro Women, the Louise Williams Educational Service Award. In 1991 Mayor John Daniels declared an Enid Sargeant Day at which time she received recognition and an award from all State Representatives. Enid taught black history throughout the school year and in after school programs, which included Seniors who shared local and state history with the students. Along with the three R’s Enid taught her mostly black inner-city students a fourth r”, and that’s their roots. Enid was also active in the American Federation of Teachers, Girl Scouts, African American Women’s Agenda, NAACP, a Life Member National Council of Negro Women, Mentor and Cooperating Teacher for Senior Students. She was a life long member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and Member of the Friends of the Library. Enid leaves to mourn her sisters, Doris Seely of Towson, MD, Dorothy Harris of New Haven, CT, Gwendolyn Sargeant of Hamden, CT, and her brother Ivan Sargeant and his wife Dorothy of White Plains, NY, sister-in-law Hilda Sargeant of Wexler, Germany, life-long friend, Evelyn Singley and countless nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He leaves to cherish his memory; Mother, Jacqueline Allen of New Haven; Daughter, Keimani Gilmore, East Haven; Brothers, James Johnson, Xavier Johnson and Lamar Hall, Jr.; Sisters, Joshala Gilmore and Kashala Gilmore; Fianc√©, Carmen Clough; Maternal Grandmother, Lillie Johnson of North Carolina; Paternal Grandparents, Melvin and Dorothy Gilmore of New Haven and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Johnny T. Gilmore, Sr. and Maternal Grandfather, Henry Johnson. Ruth Jenkins, 87, of New Haven, departed this life January 24, 2009. She was the widow of Carlton Jenkins. Born in New Haven, CT, November 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Taylor Jackson.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Patricia Emery, Janice Jackson, Jacqueline Miller, Marlene Green, Keith Jenkins (Rose), Dennis Jenkins, Lorraine Nickerson (Steven) and Robert Williams (Nina); a sister, Helen Tyson; 21 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son Carlton Chucky” Jenkins; granddaughters, Tracey Jackson and Marlene Healy; a grandson, Tyrese Jenkins; a brother, Charles Jackson; and sisters, Roberta Kelly and Ann Coleman. A celebration of Mrs. Jenkins’ life and legacy will be held Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul UAME Church, 1267 Chapel St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Burial will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. Curvin K. Alphonso Raiford, 77, of New Haven, departed this life January 21, 2009. He was the husband of Ada Raiford. Born in Goldsboro, NC, June 13, 1931, he was the son of the late Jessie and Beatrice Raiford. He was employed by the State of Connecticut as a Judicial Marshal and prior to retiring, was employed at the V.A. Medical Center. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Garner Chisolm, Marion Y. Coley McAuley (Ralph), and Sandra Raiford Barnes (William Sr.); a special granddaughter, Bridget Chisolm; sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a sister, Beatrice Exum. A celebration of Mr. Raiford’s life and legacy will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Temple Church, 285 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Masonic services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Curvin K. She also served her country in the United States Army. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Kelvin Moody, II of New Haven; Mother, Henrietta Whitaker, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Ellie Brunson. Kenneth Wesley Lowry, 60, of New Haven, departed this life January 16, 2009. Born in New Haven, CT, February 9, 1948, he was the son of Marjorie Parris Fowler and Theodore A. Lowry. He was an entrepreneur and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brothers, Wayne N. Lowry (Madelyn), Theodore K. Lowry (Robin), David E. Fowler (Janet) and Wayne Miggins (Geraldine); a sister, Pamela M. Fowler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Lowry’s life will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Ave., New Haven.
