Born in Greenville, NC, March 25, 1942, he was the son of the late Julius and Lula Graham. Mr. Graham was an Army veteran and prior to retiring, he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a Welder. He leaves to cherish his memories a son, Leroy Graham, Jr.(Joan); a brother, Horace Graham; a special niece, Deborah Graham; his former spouse, Corina Graham; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Julius Graham. Corene Johnson of New Haven, departed this life Saturday, April 12, 2008. She was the loving wife of the late Cleaven Johnson Sr. Corene was born October 7, 1921 in Wrightsville, GA. She was the seventh child of 12 Childern of Lucious and Jenny Wright. Ethel James 84, of 321 Eastern St. died Tuesday, April 18, 2008 at St. Raphael’s Hospital after a brief illness. Ethel was the daughter of the late John and Sarah Jackson James was born in Ansonia, CT. on December 13, 1923. She was a Telephone Operator for SNET for 28 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church. Candra LaDavia Stewart, 29, of Wayfarer St., New Haven, devoted mother of three children, Rayana Downer, Noah and Canaan Burney, died March 13, 2008 after a significant battle at Bridgeport Burn Center. Born in New Haven, March 24, 1978, she was the cherished daughter of Dorothea Stewart-Cooper. She was employed at Crossroads of New Haven as a passionate Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Candra will be deeply missed by her stepfather, Luther Cooper; three brothers; David Stewart Sr. (Lisa), Dion Younger (Vicki), and SPC Alain Hawley Jr.; two sisters, Catrina Hawley-Stewart and Allyse Algarin. She was the beloved niece of Auntie Debbie Stewart-Highsmith & Uncle Bob and Uncle James Stewart Jr. (Joan). She also leaves her father, Allen Hubbard Jr.; grandmothers, Florence Hubbard and Lucette Hawley; and a host of aunts uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Doris and James Stewart Sr., Allen Hubbard Sr. and dad Alain“John” Hawley Sr.

David Dixon, Jr., 73, of New Haven, departed this life March 7, 2008. He was the widower of Eva Mae Dixon. Born in Greenville, NC, February 23, 1935, he was the son of the late David Dixon, Sr. and Almeta Dixon.

Shirley E. Davis
Shirley E. Davis born in New Haven, on February 23, 1935 entered into eternal rest, on March 9, 2008. She was a daughter and predeceased by her parents James and Grace Sands. She was also predeceased by 5 brothers: Wallace, Harry, Stilson, Herbert and Melvin Sands all of New Haven. She is survived by an uncle Theodore Lowry of Norwalk and two sisters Gwendolyn Russell of New Haven and Bernice Miles of Wallingford. Her ex-husband Eldridge Davis Jr. also of New Haven. She was the mother of Annette Sands Aryee, grandmother to Camille Sands, and great-grandmother to Autumn Sands-Coldwell and Sage Sands-Daniels. She is also survived by host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She attended Morgan State, Quinnipiac, and Southern CT Universities. Shirley was a board member of the Urban League of Greater New Haven 1974 – 1980. She also served as a vice chair person on The Commission of Equal Opportunities from 1977 – 1980.
Shirley was the first black female career employee of the New Haven Post Office in 1958. She was also the first female president of NAPFE District 8 in 1972: first Female National Secretary NAPFE 1980: one of the highest racking women in the US Labor Movement until she retired. As a young girl, she was member of St. Luke Episcopal Church and a Charter member of the Girls Friendly Society. In 1961 she joined the Parish of St. Andrews Episcopal Church until her death. James E. Lloyd Jr., age 41, formerly of Sherman Ct., New Haven, departed this life March 7, 2008. Born August 9, 1966, in New Haven, CT, he was the beloved son of James Lloyd Sr. and Vanetta Lloyd both of New Haven. He was fondly known by his loved ones and friends as “Junior”. James was a graduate of James Hillhouse High School in New Haven and furthered his education at the University of Bridgeport. He was formerly employed by the City of New Haven Board of Education Child Development Program. James had a great love for children and he dedicated his life to being an advocate for children. In addition to his parents, he leaves to cherish his memory his son, Erik Shurman Lloyd; a stepsister Cherisa Lloyd ; 3 nephews Jaylon, Terrence and Leroy; a niece Janaijah; a god sister, Crystal Beard-Morton (Timothy); a god brother, Billy Madden, Jr.(Marguerite) all of New Haven; a spiritual sister, Stacie Byrdsong (Elder Dr. Rafer Byrdsong)of Bloomfield, CT; his loving grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Lloyd of Robersonville, NC; his spiritual grandmothers, Reverend Dollie Clemons and Mother Gloria Fraser both of New Haven; a special friend, Andrea Harris and her daughter Danielle Jackson of New Haven. He also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed. He was predeceased by his grandparents, William and Rubinell Slade; Major Lloyd Sr. and an adopted grandmother Theresa L. Kimbro.
