James Stanley, Sr., 72, of New Haven, departed this life December 5, 2007.
Born in Pitt County, NC, March 12, 1935, he was the son of the late Johnny Heath and Nancy Stanley. Mr. Stanley was employed for numerous years at U.S. Steel as a Machine Operator.
He is survived by his former spouse, Eleanor Beard Stanley; sons, James Stanley, Jr. (Rebecca) of Hamden, Edward Beard of New Haven, Eugene Beard (Diane) of Snellville, GA and Alton Brown of Bethel, NC; daughters, Crystal Beard-Morton (Timothy) and Marsha Beard both of New Haven, Nancy Brown of Bethel, NC and Mary Pettaway of Tarboro, NC; brothers, William Stanley of New Haven, Charlie and James H. Heath, both of Greenville, NC, Johnny Heath of Pearce, FL and Jessie Heath of Virginia Beach, VA; daughters, Lillian Doward of Rocky Mount, NC and Louise Sharpe, Doris Heath and Mary Jones all of Greenville, NC; 17 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Charlie Stanley, Jr. and sisters, Martha Mae Doward, Ella Mae Brown and Pearl Wooten. Joseph N. Hamilton Sr., 81, of Shelton Avenue, New Haven, died peacefully at the VA Hospital in West Haven, CT., on December 4, 2007. He was the husband of the late Corene Hamilton. Son of the late Andrew and Victoria Hamilton of Yemassee, SC, Joseph was born in Colleton County, SC on December 8, 1925. He was a World War II Army Veteran, where he was stationed in Northern France. He moved his family to New Haven, CT in 1957. He was employed with Fusco Amatruda Construction Company, Seamless Rubber Company, Black Interior (where he worked as a bartender) and N & L Trucking Company where he was last employed. He leaves daughters, Shirley Williams, Dorothy Hamilton, Diane Hamilton-Toles and Dinette Hamilton of New Haven, Ella “Rena” Hamilton of Irvington, N.J., Gwendolyn Hamilton Ahmed (Rasool) of Leawood, KS, and Marie Rivers (Willie) of Yemassee, S.C., Cheryl Mitchell (Anthony) of Beaufort S.C., sons, Dennis Hamilton (Terry) of Stratford CT., Joseph “Rusty” Hamilton Jr. (Natalia) of New Haven, and Steve Smalls (Liz) of Hampton S.C., a sister, Queenie Williams (Matthew) of Yemassee, S.C., a special nephew, Dr. J. Ida Lee Williams transitioned to her eternal reward on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the age of 77. Born August 18, 1930 in Eutaw, Alabama to the late Isaac and Idell Thomas. Ida was a domestic engineer who served as Treasurer, Usher, Deaconess, Sunday School Superintendent & Teacher, President & Secretary of the Senior Choir & Secretary of the Women of the Church of God (WCG) at First Church of God for many years. Ida was quiet in spirit and a woman of few words, but she stood tall in stature. She was married to the late James Turner Williams, & is survived by their three daughters Melva Boyd of Hamden, Iris of New Haven & Anna (Morris) of West Haven, CT. She is also survived by four grandchildren Kevin, Joshua, Kelsee & Jordyn; three great grandchildren Kevnesha, Alexis and Kevin, Jr.; a loving sister Vera Cummings; two sister-in-laws Geneva Ayers & Rebecca Williams of Washington, DC; one God daughter Sharlene Perry; and many other family and friends. Samuel Rufus Fort, age 82, of New Haven, CT passed away on Monday, November 19, 2007. He was born September 15, 1925 in Stamford, CT. He was the son of John Thomas Fortt and Cleo Ivory Fortt. He is predeceased by his wife, Elouise Ellis Fort and his oldest son, Wayne Allen Fort, and siblings Rebecca, John, Louis, Clarence, Roseanna and James Fortt. He is survived by his son Craig Ellis Fort of New Haven, and daughters Audrey Quao and Michele Carpenter both of Hamden; a sister Mary Thomas Long; 7 grandchildren, Angela Wardlaw of New Haven, CT, Darryl Fort of Portland, ME, Robin Fort of Charlestown, Nevis and Adom Quao of New Haven, CT, Justin, Ryenne and Aidan Carpenter of Hamden; 2 great grandchildren, Jordan Ringwood of New Haven, and Douglas S. Wardlaw, Jr. of New Haven. Sam retired from the United States Postal Service in 1988 after 20 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served honorably in WWII on the USS Hornet. During his tour of duty he traveled extensively which sparked a love of traveling that took him to several countries in his lifetime. Larry A. Ferrell
Larry A. Ferrell, 61, of New Haven, CT, departed this life October 10, 2007. Born in New Haven, CT, July 1, 1946, he was the son of Chester Bordeaux and the late Louisa Gomes Ferrell. Larry was a world renown dancer, appearing on Broadway with Pearl Bailey in “Hello Dolly” and with dance greats Cab Calloway and Honey Coles. He also had the opportunity to perform with Dr. Pearl Primus, one of the foremost authorities on African Culture at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Larry taught dance in New Haven for over two decades primarily to minority children and youth starting at the “Q” House. He also taught classes at Trinity College in Hartford, Dee Dee’s Dance and Fitness Center and several schools within the City of New Haven’s School System. In addition to his father, he is survived by brothers, Antonio, Romero (Cynthia) and Theodore (Deborah) Perry, John and Rishaud (Constance) Gomes and Emmanuel Ferrell; a loving aunt, Ruth Gallon; a devoted uncle, Paul Gomes (Delilah); a special cousin, Paula Gomes McCall (Nathan); other siblings, many nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Sherman Perry; his sister, Helen Vera Gomes; grandparents, Helen Keyes and Paulo Gomes DaGama; and an aunt, Viola Gomes Foster. Magdalene Bruno Eusebe, 70, of 120 Glenview Terrace, New Haven, died on Sunday, October 28, 2007 following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Magdalene was born in Dominica, West Indies on September 20, 1937. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Bruno and Estelle Thomas, and wife of the late John Eusebe. She was grandmother of 23, great grandmother of 2 and and aunt to many nieces and nephews. She is survived by 2 sisters Analita Boatswain of St. Croix and Marie Bruno of Guadalupe; 4 brothers Reynold Bruno, Masden and Matthew Bruno of Dominica and Cecil Bruno of St. Croix. Jamelle Marquento Agosto, age 20, of New Haven departed this life on October 4, 2007. He was the beloved great nephew of Pastor Bernard Peterson and Deveria Branch Peterson with whom he resided. Gloria Cynthia Amory Harris of Raleigh, NC , peacefully joined her Lord and savior on October 3, 2007 surrounded by her loving family and friends. Gloria was born Nevis, BWI in May 30, 1939 and after the death of her parents, she moved to New Haven in 1952 to live with her maternal Grandmother and a large, loving, and supportive extended family. She was the Granddaughter of Rose, Brown, Mills, Liburd and the daughter of Lucina Albertha Jeffers Amory and Athelstan Edgar Amory of Nevis BWI and the youngest sister of her oldest brothers, Wilmot Brown Amory and Alvin Brown Amory; all of whom preceded her in death. Gloria Cynthia Harris attended Hillhouse High School in New Haven where she was an outstanding honors student who obtained many academic and leadership awards. Throughout her youth, she was an active participant and leader in many of the youth programs sponsored by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she remained a member throughout her life. After graduation from Hillhouse High School in 1958, she attended Quinnipiac College in Hamden, majoring in Medical Technical Assistance. Gloria Cynthia Harris is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dr. George D. Harris, of New Haven and Raleigh, NC, and three sons: George Dewey Harris III, his wife Sandra, and their children, George IV and Kendra of Wilmington, NC, Glenn D. Harris of Pembroke Pines, FL, Gregory Duncan Harris, his wife Garcia, and their children, Jocelyn and Grant of Windsor, CT; an older brother, Nelson Brown Amory of Leeds, England; and two older sisters, Delcina Amory Harding of Toronto, Canada, and Phyllis Amory Lindsey of Hamden; an aunt, Mrs. Mildred Liburd of New Haven; and by many loving brothers and sisters in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as by many faithful friends both in Connecticut and in North Carolina. Gloria is regarded by her immediate family as the kind of loving and generous wife, mother, and grandmother that God intended for every Christian family —- a vessel of strength, love, tenderness, and understanding. She gave enthusiastically and unstintingly of her time, energy, and encouragement to each member of her family to ensure that they developed to their fullest potential spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. She was unwavering in her support and devotion to her husband and the nurturing of their three sons and in making their house, wherever they lived, into a home wherein they could grow strong in body and sound in mind and character. She filled each home with love, happiness, charity, and a climate of peace and security. She was their refuge during stormy periods of their lives and the center of their universe. And in turn, they gave her what made her most happy —- the manifestation of her moral values and wise teachings in their daily lives. They realize today that each of them will be lesser men without her in their respective tomorrows, than what they were with her in their respective yesterdays. They feel especially blessed to have shared the life of such a beautiful and very special person and they will miss her presence every day for the rest of their lives. A celebration of her life will take place at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Ave. on Wednesday October 10. There will be a viewing from 9:00am – 10:45am with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Dr. Victor Rogers will officiate. Interment will follow immediately after at Beaverdale Cemetery, 90 Pine Rock Ave. in New Haven. (Skippy) Jackson B. Gardin
Jackson Bernard Gardin, 65, formerly of New Haven, died on August 10, 2007 at Northridge Hospital, Northridge, CA after a short illness. Skippy is survived by his mother, Hattie L. Turner, three children, Michelle and Michael of New Haven, and Barry (Lisa) Gardin of Hayward, CA; three brothers, Ronnie and Philip of Tucson, AZ; Glenn Turner of New Haven; four sisters, Denise Gardin Holmes of Tucson, AZ, Penny Phillips, Patsy Hall, and Cherita Turner of Boston, MA; five grandchildren, three aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Skippy was predeceased by one sister, Stacey Turner. A memorial service will be held at Howard K.
