Shirley Ann Carmon wasn’t one to give up. She was an amazingly strong woman who overcame obstacles with courage and grace. As a mother, she taught me the biggest lesson on love. Her love for family was unconditional. As a mother, she was also nurturing. The relationship we shared was truly a gift. I’m grateful for the bond we shared and will carry her in my heart forever. Shirley had strong values and lived by them everyday. She had a strong work ethic and was a perfectionist. She was the Matriarch of her family and enjoyed hosting events to bring the family together. Her favorite past time included: shopping, watching Lifetime, NBA Basketball and the Soap Operas. Born on August 6, 1943 in Pitt County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Geneva Boyd Carmon. She moved to New Haven as a child and attended New Haven Public Schools. She began working for Yale New Haven Hospital and later United Technologies at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where she remained an active employee of 39 years at the time of her death. However, she stated she was only going to work there for one day. Shirley passed away peacefully at home on June 9, 2009 surrounded by family. She leaves to cherish her memory her only biological child and devoted daughter, Sheila Carmon of New Haven, daughter Gwenadine Carmon Felder (William)of New Haven; two sisters: Carolyn Carmon (Marvin) of Hamden, CT and Bettie Carmon (Mac) of Lauderhill, Fl and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by two brothers, William Oscar and Johnnie Carmon; three sisters, Janie Mae Thomas, Fannie Mae and Eloise Carmon.
