2 Shot, 1 Killed

Police are investigating a double shooting that left one teen dead and another injured.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:

At 8:56 p.m. on Monday, police responded to reports of gunfire and two young men on the ground at Butler and Lilac streets in Newhallville. Police arrived to find two men who had been shot, at the sidewalk next to Lincoln-Bassett school.

Both men were taken to the hospital, where one, 17-year-old Taijhon Washington of New Haven, was pronounced dead at 9:28 p.m. The other, Washington’s half-brother, who is 16 years old and also from Hamden, was listed in critical condition.

Police received reports of a third possible shooting victim and conducted an extended search.

Officers followed evidence from the crime scene to an apartment house on Newhall Street, where they located an assault victim,” Hartman said. He had not been shot. There is a probable connection to the shootings, but that has yet to be confirmed. The assault victim’s injury is reported to be minor and non-life threatening.”

As of 10:30 p.m., police had not identified any of the victims, nor had they determined a motive for the shootings.

Detectives from the department’s Major Crimes Division and Bureau of Identification are on scene investigating,” Hartman said. Anyone with information is asked to phone 203 – 946-6304 and speak with detectives. Calls may be made anonymously.”
