Parents, teachers, students and administrators gave standing ovations Monday night for four district officials and administrators who will retire in June: Imma Canelli, deputy superintendent; Kim Johnsky, director of instruction; Worthington Hooker School Principal Sheryl Hershonik; and Riverside Principal Wanda Gibbs.

The announcements were made at a Board of Education meeting.

Canelli (at left in above photo) wiped away tears as Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries described her as a teacher of teachers” in the district. Click here to read more about her retirement. Board members, administrators, teachers and parents took the mic to praise her work building the district’s curriculum from nothing and collaborating with teachers in the process.

Johnsky was the only other of the four present at Monday night’s meeting. She has been in New Haven Public Schools for 28 years, passing through both Nathan Hale and Fair Haven Schools. Harries praised her ability to work with both an iron fist and velvet glove,” charming people and fighting for the best interests of students, when necessary.

He promised to start planning for how to fill those vacancies with worthy” successors.

Board of Education member Darnell Goldson asked Harries what the plan is for filling teacher and support staff vacancies at schools, and how to get the number of vacancies for each school at the district. Harries said schools immediately start working to fill their vacancies and promised to get exact numbers at a future meeting.

Students can go months without certified math and science teachers, ed board member Edward Joyner said. It’s fair to those children or parents or to the community if we can’t figure out a way to institute a rapid response to that problem,” he said.

He made a motion asking for a monthly update of vacancies across the district. Goldson added a friendly amendment” asking if that data can include the date of the vacancy and projected date for filling the position.

Harries said the proposed filling date for most positions is ASAP” unless officials decide not to fill the position at all. Sometimes a delay results because we decide the pool is not strong enough,” he said.

Joyner made another motion asking that the board convene a panel of people from within and outside of the district to hold exit interviews with people leaving to get a sense of why people are leaving the system and what it might take to keep them.”

Right now, staff members exiting the district receive a survey, said Michael Crocco, who heads the talent office. The return rate on the surveys is low, so convening a board-run panel could be useful, he said.

Both motions passed unanimously.
