City firefighters saved five people on the second floor of a building on State Street Saturday.
They were responding to a two-alarm fire at 10:30 a.m. The fire destroyed a restaurant, Da Legna Wood-Fired Pizza (the former Amato’s), on the first floor.
It started in the restaurant, The smoke spread to an upstairs apartment where a family lives.
Firefighters Lou Oliwa, Justin Bialecki, Jeff Brabham, and Ken Nolan and Lt. Ryan DiVito broke through a back door on the first floor, went upstairs, got the back door open to the apartment, then brought the five occupants to safety, according to Fire Chief Michael Grant.
“They were in trouble,” Grant said of the family members. “Had they not been rescued by our guys, there could have been a tragic outcome.”
Grant said investigators don’t yet know what started the fire. Its cause is not considered suspicious, Grant said. “They just put a new oven in the place,” he noted.
Click here to read an account of the fire from the scene by the Register’s Michelle Tuccitto Sullo. Including this quotation from a neighbor: “It is great pizza – it is very unfortunate.”

Quick - while they are still busy risking their lives to saves others!! Let’s denounce them as union fat cats and find a way to screw them out of their pensions and benefits!

Liam, as long as we can find able-bodied people to rush into burning buildings for the same cost or less than these guys, I’m afraid that’s the way the world works.

Hey Folks,
The Sohu Upper State neighbors are rallying to help with medical bills for three animals that were rescued from the fire and are being treated at Central Pet Vet. If you can give it would be very helpful as the owner, a veteran, was in a car accident the morning of the fire and has additional expenses to cover. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=FMJR6QVAFX6E4

JAK: Sorry, but your rush to the bottom theory doesn’t hold water when people’s lives are at stake. A bunch of fly by night temps just don’t fill the bill. I wouldn’t hire bottom of the barrel teachers, doctors, firefighters or any other profession where you would need to know what you are doing. Your theory works for WalMart greeters, busboys, and maybe receptionists at a tanning salon but your small-time view spreads thinner than a $2 gallon of paint. You get what you pay for - and THAT is the way the world really works.

Liam Skye, I think JAK’s views are much along the same line as yours: that firefighters are undervalued, and that politicians are looking to cut their benefits particularly pensions, if they can.
While I object to this very much, I think the days of pensions for Firefighters, Police Officers, and Teachers are numbered. I think in less than twenty years, all three professions will have defined contribution plans instead.

What about the people who lost their home due to the fire? Can any information be released about them and their needs (e.g., clothing, bedding/linen, toys to comfort the kids, basic essentials, etc.)? I feel for the animals, but according to the Register article: “Fire Chief Michael Grant said firefighters rescued five people from the second floor, including three children, a teenager and one adult.” I would like to help, and I imagine others would, too.
