Clean Sweep Made In Newhallville

With warm temps and blue skies, residents and friends joined forces to help Newhallville clean away the dregs of winter.

Rakes and shovels in tow, eight teams of people Saturday decked out in yellow, reflective safety vests took to the neighborhood’s streets to clear away litter and dirt that had accumulated during this year’s long gray winter.

The clean-up day was organized with the help of Honda Smith and Lynwood Dorsey of the public works department and Newhallville Alder Delphine Clyburn (pictured). The crews started their beautification efforts bright and early at 7 a.m.

Starting on Winchester Avenue and working their way to Shelton Avenue, the teams tackled sidewalks and city property on more than 10 streets in the neighborhood that had been besieged by litter after the snow melted.

They raked …

… and then raked some more on Ivy Street.

They scooped leaves and trash, and returned garbage cans to their rightful homes. (Pictured: DPW’s Smith.)

Students from Quinnipiac University grabbed some big brooms to help with the cause.

With an assist from city employees who brought out a street sweeper and leaf blowers for the heavy duty stuff, they made the streets of Newhallville look even better.

When Starr Street was looking pretty clean, neighbors like Nazim Muhammed (pictured), who said he came out to help his neighborhood and encourage others to do the same, grabbed up their tools and hit the next street.
