Paolillo’s Running

Annex Alder Alphonse Paolillo Jr. is looking to move up to the state legislature.

Paolillo, who’s 43, sought and won the Democratic Party’s endorsement Saturday to run for the open 97th General Assembly District state representative seat this November.

He had no competition for the seat at the party’s nominating convention, which was held at the Betsy Ross School parish hall on Kimberly Avenue.

Robert Megna announced earlier this month that he will not seek reelection to the seat, which he has held for 16 years.

I’m really honored and grateful and humbled by the opportunity to be able to serve the residents of the 97th District and the city,” Paolillo said. I’ve been serving on the board for close to a decade and a half. I see this as an extension of that service, to provide that same kind of representation in Hartford.

Democrats hold all of New Haven’s state representative seats. All the other incumbents — Juan Candelaria, Pat Dillon, Toni Walker, Roland Lemar, and Robyn Porter — are running for reelection with no announced opposition within the party at this point. And the party has endorsed them all.

Republican Town Chairman Jonathan Wharton said his party has endorsed one candidate to run for state representative: Douglas Losty. He will face Walker in the 93rd District. Losty has been active in a local property owners group.
