Census Numbers, Musical Numbers On Tap This Week

Coming to town: Census historian Anderson; Nobody’s Girl.

Illegal electrical hook-ups don’t just help people cheat on zoning rules. They can cheat New Haven out of federal dollars and representation.

Why? Because when the government sets out trying to track down people to count in the U.S. census, it relies on its records about how many apartments are in a building. It relies on local officials to help track down illegal hook-ups to reveal more households that need to be counted — and it’s hard for local officials to discover all those hook-ups.

And if a city is undercounted, it can receive fewer federal grant dollars based on population. And theoretically have fewer representatives when districts are redrawn based on population.

Margo Anderson knows about those fine-point U.S. census details — and the big-picture consequences. A professor of history and urban studies, she has written two books on the census.

She’s coming to town this Wednesday, Nov. 13, to participate on a panel with census expert Terri Ann Lowenthal to help New Haven prepare for the 2020 census. (Click here to read more about those preparations.) The event, at the downtown Ives Memorial library at Temple and Elm, begins at 6 p.m.

Anderson previewed some of her observations, including about electrical hook-ups, during an interview on WNHH FM’s Dateline New Haven.” Click on the video below to watch the episode.

After she spoke about census numbers, BettySoo, an Austin-based folk-blues singer-songwriter, talked about musical numbers.

She’s a familiar face, and voice, in New Haven. This Sunday night she’s coming to the latest installment of Fernando Pinto’s East Rock Concert Series at mActivity at 285 Nicoll St (starting at 6:30; details here).

BettySoo is coming with a new trio called Nobody’s Girl; also on the bill is New Haven’s Goodnight Moonshine.

On Dateline New Haven,” BettySoo talked about her musical roots, the Austin music scene, how she came to know New Haven, and the role of the Internet versus old-fashioned face-to-face encounters in building a musical following. Click below to watch the full episode.
