Despite what an auto parts security guard claimed, Ankoma “Chops” Wells wasn’t part of a group of people who mugged someone in the Stop & Shop plaza.
Wells (pictured) was subject to a “civilian detention” by a 25-year-old security guard stationed outside AutoZone auto parts store at the Stop & Shop Plaza on Whalley Avenue on Tuesday March 26. The security guard claimed Wells, who’s 20, was among a group of men who knocked someone down and stole an iPhone.
Wells said he wasn’t involved. The security guard said he was.
“They reviewed the tape. It showed I wasn’t there,” Wells said. He said the court looked at security camera footage of the mugging.
As a result, all the charges against him were dropped. Wells’ aunt, former Dixwell aldermanic candidate and Democratic Town Committee member Cordelia Thorpe, showed off a printout proving that outcome during a recent visit to Edge of the Woods natural foods store on Whalley Avenue.
Wells said he sat in court for two hours before he was told the case had been dropped. “They said, ‘Sorry, Mr. Wells.’”
“I was kind of upset,” Wells said. “I still have to pay bail.”
Wells said the false arrest also cost him a job. He’d been hired at a restaurant after filling out an application that said he didn’t have a criminal record. Then he got arrested. His employer found out, thought he’d lied and fired him.
“We’re exploring how to get justice for Ankoma,” Thorpe said.
It’s “admirable” that the security guard wanted to help, but he should have “let the trained professionals do their jobs,” Thorpe said.
What a shame, and what a good explanation of systemic racism for anyone who doesn't get it.
