Cop Nabs 5, Chips Teeth

Officer Edric Agosto pulled over a car and helped make five arrests, as well as seize drugs, money, and a gun — and he may be headed to the dentist as a result.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:

At 1:33 a.m. on Tuesday, Agosto spotted a black Ford Taurus run a red light at Church Street South and Columbus Avenue. He pulled the car over, but it sped off while he was communicating with a dispatcher.

The driver struck a curb while taking a turn, the airbags deployed, and the car stopped.

Officers Kyle Malloy and David Stratton arrived, and the three cops approached the Taurus, which had five people in it. The driver wouldn’t cooperate with cops and yelled at Malloy several times that he should shoot him.

A struggle ensued. Agosto’s front teeth were chipped when he and the driver fell to the ground. Cops managed to arrest the 30-year-old, a felon who had on him nine bags of weed, two cell phones, and some suspected ill-gotten cash.” Police charged him with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, having a weapon in a motor vehicle, interfering with police, engaging police in a pursuit, motor vehicle violations and four drug crimes.

The other passengers didn’t resist. Police found a Ruger P34 .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol in the car, beneath a balled up T‑shirt. The passengers were charged with various drug and gun charges.

In other police news, Kelly’s bar on Crown Street has paid a $250 fine and will have its liquor license suspended on Aug. 5. The fine and suspension are the result of four violations found by the liquor control commission, having to do with a minor in barroom, cafe permits, applications for permits, and the display of permits.
