Cops Nab 6 Dirt Bikes

There are six fewer dirt bikes disturbing the peace of people living on Truman Street.

At about 7 p.m. Wednesday, neighbors could hear the familiar warm-weather sounds of riders on dirt bikes and could see them tearing up Truman Street, according to Lt. Jason Minardi, district manager for Hill South.

Fed up, several neighbors, many with small children, called the police who were in the area and actually saw some of the bikers. Though the New Haven Police Department has a no-chase policy, that didn’t stop them from sleuthing to see if they could find out where the riders stored their bikes.

Officers scoured the street and eventually found them behind some apartments at 19 – 20 Truman Ave.

There was a big pick-up truck with dirt bikes on the back,” Minardi said. Turns out the truck was stolen and officers were able to make an arrest, but unable to nab the actual bike riders. Officers were, however, able to confiscate the six dirt bikes and lock them up at the police garage on Sherman Parkway.

The possible owners of those bikes, likely not pleased that the cops had taken them, attempted to steal the bikes back by breaking into the garage, according to Lt. Tony Reyes. Though they successfully broke into the garage, they did not manage to get the bikes.
