Could New Haven Be Connecticut’s Dancing City?

Alisa Bowens has a vision: across the Green, a hundred bodies rocking and swaying to the same song, dancing their way towards a healthier lifestyle.

Some are hand in hand, swinging each other wildly as they laugh and chatter about the day’s events around town. Others move to the beat alone, lifting their arms over their heads and perfecting some fancy footwork. Everyone, she imagines, is having a good deal of fun.

It turns out she’s not the only one. She sat down with Mayor Toni Harp to discuss this abiding fantasy on the first episode of Alisa’s Culture Cocktail.” You can listen to the episode, which also included Marriage Counselor T. Charles Brantley and a chat with Premiere Concerts’ Keith Mahler, by clicking on the link above or accessing it under WNHH Community Radio” in Soundcloud or iTunes.

The vision of people on the Green dancing is a dream,” Bowens said to Mayor Harp. I’m so excited about … Health in Your Hands and the healthy neighborhood kick off. We really need to have a city that’s healthy, that’s excited about nutrition and wants to move.”

The mayor is pretty jazzed too. So much so, in fact, that she’s put on her dancing shoes.

We have this great opportunity to … begin to address the issue of childhood obesity and physical activity in our community. To teach our kids about nutrition. We have some communities that want to dance on the Green!,” she said.

We’re going to be the city that dances,” she added.
