Shooting Victim Hikes To Hospital

Officers headed to the area of Day and Chapel streets after gunfire was reported at just after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Here’s what happened in that incident, and others, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:

While officers were en route, they spotted a man who spotted them. The man turned around and took off running. The Division Street resident was apprehended after jumping a fence at the Amistad School.

Moments later, officers found a 25-year-old gunshot victim. The man was walking on Chapel Street to the hospital. He told officers he’d been near his apartment talking with a friend when he heard two gunshots. He’d been shot in the forearm and hip. He said he asked his mom to take him to the hospital but eventually headed there on his own.

The area where the Division Street man was apprehended was searched by Officer Lars Vallin’s police dog, Xander. At the base of the fence the man had climbed over was a Jennings GA 9mm handgun. Several shell casings were recovered from Day Street.

So far, the man has been arrested and charged with interfering with police. More charges are pending.

Routine Traffic Stop Turns Up Gun

Officer Ryan Hall Monday spotted an improperly parked rental car at Truman and West streets around 4:30 p.m. The car was occupied by two men and reeked of marijuana. Hall summoned a couple of his fellow officers while he detained the driver and his passenger, who also happened to be a convicted felon.

A small amount of marijuana was found in the car. The men also admitted to smoking some earlier. The driver was taken into custody for an outstanding warrant and issued an infraction for the marijuana and the parking violation.

When officers asked the passenger out of the car, they found a loaded HR .22 caliber long revolver beneath his seat. The passenger admitted it was his gun. He was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle and the minor drug offense. The gun and marijuana were seized.

Gunshot Victim Gets Religious

Police officers and medics responded late Monday night to the 600 block of Grand Avenue after someone there was reportedly shot. Witnesses told police the shooter was driving a grey two-door Honda, but no one could identify the shooter. Officers arrived but found no victim, nor evidence of the reported incident.

A few minutes later, security officers from Yale-New Haven Hospital called to report a shooting victim had been dropped off and was seeking treatment for two wounds to his left calf and ankle.

The victim was 27 year-old man who is believed to live on Eastern Street. The gunshot victim refused to cooperate with investigators. He wouldn’t divulge the identity of the person who drove him to the hospital, nor any information on the circumstances surrounding his being shot. He told detectives: Allah would take care of it.” The man was released from the hospital a few hours later.

Beating Him To The Punch

Officers rushed to a reported domestic dispute and stabbing Tuesday evening at an apartment on Russell Street. They arrived to find a man suffering from a minor laceration to his right shoulder.

Witnesses told the cops that the man was stabbed by his brother-in-law who lives on Salem Street in New Haven. They were told a dispute between sisters was being settled when the brothers-in-law began their own dispute.

The brother-in-law would later report that he was married to one of the sisters and somehow got roped into the dispute. The man he stabbed was known to carry a knife so he pulled his first and stabbed him. The brother-in-law said he left the scene with his girlfriend and four children. He was pulled over while driving on Clifton Street and arrested.

Meanwhile at the hospital, the stabbed man spoke with detectives. He reported an account of how he was stabbed that was similar to what his brother-in-law had recounted earlier to police. The brother-in-law was charged with second degree assault and two counts of risk of injury. The stab victim was treated and released from the hospital.

Bloody Trail Leads to Hospital

Officers headed to 594 Ferry St. Tuesday at about 9:37 p.m. after the homeowner heard a gunshot and discovered a blood-trail from her grandson’s bedroom to the kitchen. The 18-year-old grandson was nowhere to be found.

Cops searched the home and collected evidence. No gun was located. The worried grandmother told investigators that her grandson used the bedroom as a recording studio to practice rapping. She said he’d been there with two friends. After the shot, she said they left in his car.

A short while later, an 18-year-old man was dropped off at Yale-New Haven Hospital with gunshot wounds to his chest and left arm. The driver of the car was the grandson. Another friend of the grandson and the 18-year-old friend was in the car as well.

The car was impounded as evidence. Its driver and passenger were interviewed. The 18-year-old gunshot victim was last listed in serious condition. Detectives are still working on this case. Charges have yet to be filed.

The truck driver was taken to the hospital after complaining of chest pains. The car’s operator was seriously hurt. His injuries included a broken femur. He is in stable condition. The car’s operator is at fault. Specific charges are pending.
