In 1989, it was just days after John C. Daniels bested an establishment-backed candidated named John DeStefano in a Democratic primary on his way to become New Haven’s first African-American mayor. As if that weren’t precedent enough, Daniels dangled the idea that he could become mayor without relinquishing his powerful seat in the state Senate. That would have been another first, if it had happened. Welcome to This Day In John C. Daniels History, with your host Allan Appel and the New Haven Museum’s Jason Bischoff-Wurstle.
