An alleged bank robber went out for pizza — a move that ended up landing him in the clink.
Here’s what happened, according to an official police account:
A man robbed the Webster Bank branch at 80 Elm St. last Thursday. As he fled the scene, a dye pack enclosed with the purloined cash exploded. Red-colored dye got on his sweatshirt. The robber ditched the sweatshirt in a nearby alley.
The robber got away. Cops “developed a suspect” who fit the description of an alleged bank robber wanted in Waterbury for a heist that occurred a day earlier.
On Friday, Officer Dwight Calderon got a call from someone at a local business who reported that a customer had just bought a pizza with “dye-soaked money.” Police showed up and found the customer, who had some drugs, “additional dye-soaked money and red-stained clothing on him. They arrested the man, who’s 38 years old and a parole absconder, and charged him with both the New Haven and the Waterbury bank robberies. He was jailed on a $200,000 bond.
