Driver Hits Pedestrian

Police are investigating a 2:40 p.m. Sunday collision on Exchange Street in which a driver of a Virginia-registered Misubishi Galant struck a pedestrian, sending him to the hospital for treatment of an injured right leg. Witnesses said someone pulled the driver from the car and assaulted him.

So said police spokesman Officer David Hartman. A cell phone video of that assault wasn’t clear enough to identify the assailant, Hartman reported. The driver was also taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury. An investigation into whether or not the driver was intoxicated is underway. No charges have yet been filed.”

At 12:05 a.m. Saturday, two young men confronted a College student returning to his Clark Street home, punched and kicked him,” and made off with his Dr. Dre Beats headphones,” leaving him with a swollen eye, knee abrasions and a sore abdomen,” according to Hartman. And this past Thursday, a late-morning fight led a 54-year-old man getting shot in his thighs and a foot at the Farnam Court housing development; and three young men mugged a 33-year-old man at 9:40 p.m. the same day near Dwight and Chapel streets, knock[ing] him to the ground and beat[ing] him up while he was down,” making off with his iPhone but miss[ing] his wallet.” They gave the victim a black eye.

Police identified the 65-year-old man who died in that three-car crash at South Frontage and Howard late Friday: His name is Manual Portillo. He lived in New Haven. The condition of the 12-year-ld boy injured in the crash has been upgraded to stable.
