G Cafe Outpost Closes

A victory for Three-Fifths? Sorry to see this place didn't work out, but not entirely surprising. That area is still a bit dicey so a bakery/cafe is probably not ideal. Something with a bit more crossover neighborhood appeal, mostly. What that is, I have no idea.

Wait, ya mean the things that white people like can't just be "plugged-in" any given neighborhood and thrive just the same? This.changes.everything.

@threefifths: have you ever considered adding ideas for how you would improve things rather than the continuous stream of negatives? My interpretation of your post here is that you would rather have run down buildings, a vacant church and a sleazy bar as opposed to nice apartments, a local owned store, and working class jobs. I find that difficult to comprehend

I too, would like to know if you have any suggestions or ideas about how you would go about improving things instead of trolling the NH Independent with endless commentary on "gentrification vampires" and links to NY Times articles that do not serve anyone who reads the Independent nor do they serve anyone in the community

New Haven is on a path to rebuilding and gentrifying. If you don't like it then leave.

Definitely a victory for 3/5! Sad but not surprising. It is on the wrong side of the canal trail. And foot traffic would be a stretch. No one from the lofts is walking down there for anything. I'm doubtful that anyone on Munson, Henry or Ashmun ever patronized the place. No demand for lattes, artisanal breads, etc. Hipsters be gone! At least the location will be partially fit out for a new tenant, like a corner bodega that sells smokes, beers and is open past midnight! You have to give the neighborhood what they want!

First rule of business, location location location. That spot was never busy and I feared for the safety of employees in there. Hope those employees quickly find themselves employment elsewhere. Good business, bad location. It's unfortunate for residents, employees, the neighborhood and Whole G.

Oh, too bad. Kind of surprising it seemed too far to get enough business from Science Park.
I wonder if anyone's considered trying to attract recreational bicyclists from the Farmington Canal trail? G Cafe wasn't open on weekends and there weren't any signs near the bike path to let anyone know they were there.

sadly for the neighborhood and the city, 3/5ths will get his wish here....less jobs, fewer options for the neighborhood, and an empty storefront. After reading dozens of his posts, however, I still cannot understand why this is the desired state.

Three-fifths: I know you are not the enemy. If neighborhoods could be improved without displacing long time residents, it would be a win-win.
And Martha Swift's suggestion is a good one.
The bike train should generate some local businesses convenient to cyclists and Whole G could have been it with some tweaking.
FYI, they contribute lots of breads to local charities.

From what I hear the walls there are paper thin and the rent is so damn high people are taking in roommates.

Did any of you go to this particular G Cafe? it did not even have a kitchen! What a disappointment to find out I could not order my omelet or the dozen of other items I love at the G Cafe on Orange. If this was a true G Cafe it would have totally made it, hundreds of people in Science Park 25 (including myself) are waiting for a decent quality place to eat in that neighborhood.

It's a stretch to say that Science Park has "foot traffic".

Part of the problem may stem from the trend of building fortress apartments—enclosed pseudo-communities loaded with amenities that discourage tenant contact with the community that surrounds them. In my neighborhood we have a giant gated complex plopped next to a working-class residential area. It has a library, three gyms, meeting rooms, a greatroom with a huge fireplace, an outdoor pool, movie theater, fire pit and bocci court. It offers no entry to non-residents. Presumeably the tenants may take advantage of the city ice-skating rink next door, but the skaters and their families--or anybody else in the area-- won't be able to use any of the amenities the apartment tenants enjoy.
The upside is that crumbling industrial buildings have been rejuvenated. The downside is that this kind of rejuvenation does not extend beyond a locked perimeter.

This comment section makes a striking and depressing case for the need for greater class and race integration in New Haven. Without crime data to support the idea that the cafe workers or patrons of G Cafe were in danger, we're left to assume that it is discomfort with folks that don't look like you that makes the location feel, "Dicey", "Sketchy" and "Wrong Side of The Canal Trail"

The race and class boundaries that we seem unable to break down in many of New Haven's neighborhoods are making us ugly versions of ourselves. If you think your outlook might be shaped by the long history of your surroundings and you care to change your perspective, the answer is spending more time in places where you feel uncomfortable. The world will become a much less scary place.

I lived on Winchester for quite a few years, though not in a luxury apartment. It always seemed safe to me. Of course, your friend is free to live where she wants and she should be able to feel safe where she lives. But trashing a neighborhood here and by word of mouth sure seems unnecessary.
