Gateway Teacher Accused Of Harassing Student

A part-time Gateway Community College math teacher has been arrested and charged with harassment in the second degree.

Police made the arrest after an in-depth investigation into a complaint from an 18-year-old female student of repeated inappropriate text messages and Instagram communications, according to Officer David Hartman, spokesman for the police department.

The case came to police on Nov. 10, 2016, and was assigned to Special Victims Unit Detective Leonardo Soto. The victim claimed she’d been receiving the sexually explicit messages since mid-September 2016 and that she’d made it clear to whoever was sending them that they were unwanted. The victim didn’t know who was sending the messages but thought it could have been a classmate at GCC.

Soto’s investigation took six months and involved applying for five warrants – four of them, search warrants. With the help of Sgt. Cary Broderick of the Gateway Community College Police Department, the victim’s math teacher was arrested. Gateway has put the teacher on leave. Court records on the case have been statutorily sealed.
