Girl Struck By Car

A 10-year-old girl is recovering from an injury after being struck by a car on Orchard Street.

Officers and firefighter/ EMTs responded to Orchard Street at around 3:50 p.m. Sunday afternoon near Chapel Street where the girl had been hit by a car traveling on Orchard.

The girl, who witnesses told police had gotten out of a car parked in front of 372 Orchard St., was hit by woman driving down the street, according to a release from police spokesman Officer David Hartman. The girl exited the car on the sidewalk, but walked in front of the car she had gotten out of into the roadway.

A 55-year-old Meriden woman was driving the car that struck the girl. She told police that she did not see the girl enter the street.

The girl suffered a broken leg and was transported to the pediatric unit of Yale-New Haven Hospital where she was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The investigating officer has determined the child walked into the path of the moving vehicle and was hidden from the motorist’s view. The driver was determined not to have been distracted, and was not faulted or charged.
